Playing outside is a great way to encourage teens to get active and playing outside at night is especially appealing to this age group. (BestReviews)
The latest streaming devices and technology can keep teenagers indoors for large chunks of time, organized sports notwithstanding. With the weather warming up, it’s the perfect time to get your teen outside for some fresh air, sunshine and good, unconstructed fun.
Need some incentives? Here are some tried-and-true outdoor games that might actually entice teens outside and away from their screens.
The benefits of spending time outdoors
Even before the pandemic, our lifestyles were increasingly sedentary. The advent of electronic devices combined with online schooling this past year has only amplified this trend in children. There is also something of a health crisis going on with rising rates of obesity, diabetes and depression in teenagers.
Spending time outside in nature provides a powerful counterbalance to this crisis. An international meta-study found that being outside in nature and unconstructed play time are essential components in the effort to promote more physical activity and improve social connection among children and teenagers. In other words, getting your kids outside to play encourages physical fitness, reduces the risk of chronic disease and improves their sense of wellbeing.
There are so many games teens can play outside, and most need little or no equipment. Here are some time-honored favorites. You and your teens can follow the rules or adopt your own.
You can easily set up a ball game outside, and most of them fall into the two-or-more players category so there’s plenty of flexibility for different group sizes.
Volleyball is a great aerobic workout and highly entertaining. You can set up a portable volleyball net in no time at home, in a park, at the beach or even across a pool if you're lucky enough to have access to one.
Pickleball has been around as a children's game since the 1960s and is now one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. Pickleball is a combination of tennis, ping-pong and badminton. Two or four players use paddles to hit a wiffle ball over a net. The court is about the size of a badminton court and the rules are similar to tennis.
With such a simple set up process, a Spikeball game is easy to bring and store anywhere. Spikeball is a combination volleyball and foursquare: a player serves the ball down onto the Spikeball net, so it bounces back at their opponents. The returning team has up to three hits between them to return the ball back onto the net. You can adjust the tightness of the net to the abilities of the player. A tighter, bouncier net is great for beginners.
To play kadima, all you need is wooden paddles (one per player) and a small ball. Players form a circle, and the goal of the game is to volley the ball for as long as possible.
Depending on how many players there are, you can set up teams and play in rounds. The last team to maintain their volley wins a point and five points win the game.
A little on the pricier side (you can rent them for larger groups), bumper balls can be worn to play a human game of bumper cars or, with a soccer ball thrown in, you can attempt to play a game of bubble soccer. Either way, it's a hilarious activity, guaranteed to lift your teens' spirits.
There's a reason ultimate frisbee is a competitive sport in many high schools and colleges. It's cheap, adaptable and accessible to kids of all ages and abilities. Each team has an end zone, and the goal of the game is to catch the disc in the other team's end zone to score a point. Once you catch the disc, you must stop and pivot, with one foot on the ground, like in basketball. You have 10 seconds to throw the disc to a teammate. The first team to fifteen points wins the game.
One of the most popular outdoor games right now, Kan jam is similar to cornhole and horseshoes. It involves throwing a frisbee at a can with different points being awarded for different throws. Two teams take turns throwing or deflecting the flying disc at the goal. First team to 21 points or slot the flying disc wins.
Cornhole is a classic outdoor game involving two board frames and eight bean bags. You can make a set or purchase a basic set and customize them with your teen's school colors or favorite team logo.
These games are more leisure activities than sports, but they are easy to set up in your yard and perfect for picnics and daytime parties.
Bocce dates back to at least 5200 BC. It has simple rules and appeals to a wide demographic. There are four larger balls, the bocce, and one small ball, the pallino. You begin with one player throwing the pallino across the lawn. Teams then take turns throwing the bocce at the pallino and the team with the bocce closest to the pallino wins the point. The first team to seven points wins the game.
Another centuries-old game, croquet can be played on a lawn or court. Players use long-handled mallets to knock wooden balls through a series of hoops or wickets to hit wooden stakes. The object is to hit the ball through as many wickets as possible per turn.
There’s something about being outside at night that makes any game more appealing to teenagers, especially if it involves hiding. With heightened anticipation and an element of fear and surprise, players can experience an adrenaline and endorphin rush, which is a natural mood booster.
Capture the flag is a game for all ages, but you can make it more fun for teens by playing at night with glow-in-the-dark duct tape boundaries and flags. You can easily DIY for this game or purchase a capture the flag set.
Upgrade the classic games of hide and seek and tag with these nighttime versions. Your kids can make teams and establish their own ground rules. Just add flashlights and bug spray.
