Retaining the same grimness of the previous episode, this is the one that ties everything together by revealing the identity of the ultimate mastermind, and then some, leading into the final battle. Looking past this, I'd like to say that steadily keeping the audience in suspense concerning one matter or another for this long is one of this season's storytelling triumphs, setting it apart from the first and third seasons. The first didn't have many true surprises, while the third dumped most of its key revelations with the explanations from Azulongmon, except for the identity of the Jeri imposter. But now I'm getting sidetracked.<br/><br/>This is a really shocking episode. Oikawa is portrayed at his most vulnerable yet, while his explanations shed further light on how everything that has happened so far fits into one large scheme. They also place the heroes in a tough spot, since they now know that if left unchecked the spores in the children will destroy them, giving Oikawa all the leverage he needs. Then, we are thrown a curve ball, which is where everything becomes more pressing. While it tends to be another of a slew of matters on which fans are divided, I believe making Myotismon the final enemy was a great decision (even if it is very obvious that it was not planned from the beginning). It enhances the character greatly as a schemer, and escalates the terrible acts he is capable of. In the past, he destroyed his minions after they failed. Now, he does it out of enjoyment. With Gatomon, he molded her into a minion through cruelty. Here, he ensnared people at their most vulnerable, exploiting their desires and vulnerabilities and twisting them into nightmares. Combined with other problems he has caused, this makes him more worthy of the digidestined kids' enmity than any other bad guy. Furthermore, the manner in which he is revealed is excellent, as he taunts Oikawa with images of the past and Gatomon recognizes his voice. This sequence, as well as the deaths of Arukenimon and Mummymon, has a real air of terror; the reactions from the kids feel convincing. Truly, no punches were pulled in introducing this menace.<br/><br/>The fruitless conversation amongst the kids early on is what keeps this episode from receiving a higher score, since later it will be seen that the parents of the infected kids will not be required in the resolution. However, it was nice to be reminded that the parents of the digidestined have been lending a hand here and there.
