Literaturę południa do tej pory kojarzyłam z Harper Lee albo Fannie Flagg, które co prawda poruszały problemy biedy, rasizmu itd ale jednocześnie ich książki były ciepłe i zabawne. Natomiast Erskine Caldwell w sposób wyjątkowo realistyczny w Ziemi tragicznej przedstawił kilka dni, czy tygodni z życia (białej) rodziny ze slumsów w czasach kryzysu, bez ciepła, i takiej sympatyczności, z którą kojarzyłam Południe. Owszem, jest ciepło, ale w sensie temperatury, ludzie są poczciwi - ale jednocześnie bezmyślni i głupi, są biedni - ale, nie mają żadnej ochoty wziąć się do roboty. Główny bohater, bezrobotny Spence, ma rodzinę, na której niby mu zależy - ale tak naprawdę chyba nie jest zdolny do miłości rodzicielskiej, ani jakiejkolwiek innej. Najlepsze, co można powiedzieć o nim i jego żonie, to słowa innej bohaterki (też naiwnej, ale ze szczerymi, dobrymi chęciami) pies wam mordę lizał! - naprawdę! Czyta się tę książkę gładko i szybko, ale z narastającą irytacją i złością. Skojarzyło mi się z Białą wstążką, filmem, w którym też przedstawiono zupełnie chore stosunki rodzinne - oczywiście, inna to była choroba.Nie przepadam, za takim surowym, realistycznym, czy też naturalistycznym stylem, ani za takim nurtem w literaturze, ale zobaczyłam inne oblicze tego regionu Ameryki. Dodam jeszcze, że egzemplarz, który czytałam pochodzi z 1982 roku i tłumaczenie jest trochę leciwe, a przekleństwa sa zapisane w taki sposób:k..a ;) zabawne.daje trzy gwiazdki (na 5) i raczej już do caldwella nie sięgnę.
