Truman Madsen is an obvious philosophy genius. But being that I am not, it is difficult at times to read his work. With that said, I am glad I trudged through and finished these 5 classics! And that means that actually you are not about to leave the Church as you say. You have never really been in it!....No, the Churchs flowing powers have not really been in you, whatever the geography of your Sunday afternoons.Are any of our conceivable evil thoughts beyond the Lord? If so, would there be any sound foundation for trust in him? How can a Christ who does not know or refuses to recognize our thoughts, one whose awareness is restricted to an utterly other realm of awareness, really help us now? Thus ethereal view of Christ (reinforced, I am afraid, by much traditional theology) also implies that venomous or unworthy thoughts could not e entertained by him during his mortal life, nor after. But the power of his own voice in our era has brought that impotent idea to the ground. And thus given us power to rise above the ground. He was in all points tempted like we are, with temptations of every kind. How low then can we go in our thoughts? Not as low as he in the contemplation of evil. He was tempted through the darkest abyss and descended below all things. Why? That he might be in and through all things the light of truth......For Jesus Christ is now beholding the entire ugly spectrum of human experience. Is he therefore unholy? Was he in mortality? He is in a condition that enables him to see through all ideas, judgments and images to the truth.It isnt whether you say your prayers n a proper fashion and position and time, but whether you open up honestly what is alive and more or less dead within you to the Source of life and stay with it and with him until the return wave of life enters you.What good is a woman, I am sometimes asked, who has done almost nothing for years except hold a family together? That is all. The Lords answer is that if she has created and transmitted the nutriments of spiritual life in her home (and in the early days the Saints always dedicated their home to the Lord), then she has been the purveyor of life. And nothing is more crucial!We should be open to art--for mans sake. That approach will again obliterate the ordinary distinctions between sacred and secular art. At root all music, all painting, all artful motion --even the art of conversation or baking a loaf of bread -- can have an eternal significance. It is the individualizing of ordinances. We may infuse them with our own individual creative talents. If we are to acknowledge the hand of God in all things, an indispensable first step is to summon him into all our things.He [God:] cannot bless us until we have been proved, cannot even pull out of us the giant spirit in us unless we let him.Atheists dont find God for the same reason thieves dont find policemen.He [The Prophet:] said that we did not know how to pray to have our prayers answered. Brigham Young, who learned to pray listening to the Prophet, said repeatedly to the Saints that when someone prays in a congregation we should be saying in our minds what he or she is saying with the lips. We should repeat the very words in our minds, then when we say amen we know what were saying amen to. . . .Why is it important? So that the Saints may be one. Truly the effectual, fervent power of united prayer cannot be overestimated.The Lord has to show a lot of mercy to let any of us work in His Church.Agnosticism is a kind of crutch. It is a perennial postponement of decision, and it assumes that pos6tponement is safer than commitment. Atheism is a pair of iron braces. It claims to know more than can be known. Someone has said that atheists dont find God for the same reason that bank robbers dont find policemen. They work very hard to avoid Him. But through the Doctrine and Covenants is the admonition, Seek and ye shall find. The implication is, dont seek, and you likely wont find.Faith is trust in what the spirit learned eons ago. (B.H.
