From my review at bisexual-books.tumblr.com:Different Slopes was written in 1996 and frankly it shows it’s age a bit. The book starts with an eyeroll-inducing ‘everyone is really bi’ introduction from the author but once you get into the story I found it quite interesting. Matt grows up in the conservative and insular community of Napa Valley in the early 1940’s. He’s trying his best to resist marrying the local girl everyone expects him to marry, instead finding himself utterly drawn to a curly haired boy down the road with a penchant for skinny dipping. Their romance heats up, including the addition of Daisy, a mute girl who essentially moves in and they spend an idyllic summer as a threesome. That all changes when Japan attacks Pearl Harbor and Matt enlists in the Army. I’m not entirely sure what to call this book. It’s not a romance since Matt flits from partner to partner. The main character is having lots of sex, but there are no long passages describing it, so it’s not quiiiite erotica. And while it’s historical fiction, the setting of World War II is more of a background than anything else. Some of Matt’s experiences are fascinating, especially given the time period, but it’s less of one clear story and more a string of events taking place over several years. While it is nice to read a book with an unrepentant bisexual man in the lead, in the end it wasn’t really my style. Perhaps it would be better suited for someone looking for light reading with a bit of an masculine erotic charge.
