Suddenly, hes not just a dream, but a real, flesh and blood man with flaws and aggravating, stubborn behavior. But that doesnt stop her from being in love with him, nor wanting to help him overcome his anger and save his life. This is kind of one of those simple, follows a formula but it works stories. Ive read books like this dozens of times, but no matter, I still enjoy them. This follows a lot of the cliches and tropes, but not in an overly cheesy or annoying way. In one respect, thats not a great thing because it doesnt make this book stand out. However, I got a lot of enjoyment out of it. I liked how Lauren came to realize that she was in another time, rather than in a renactment and how it highlighted the reality and brutality of war. I liked how she didnt keep bringing up aspects of the present/future (like TV and plumbing) so I was able to become immersed in the time period she was in and so that this story didnt feel in the least bit dated (and it was first published in 1997). I like that Nicholas never really buys into the fact that Lauren is from the future...even at the end he doesnt completely believe her. And I found that strange that I would like it, but he was still accepting of her eccentricities and it wasnt a huge deal to her that he believe it. So I was okay with it. I admit, I was initially discomfited by Nicholass willingness to rape an innocent girl in the name of revenge (even if he didnt). I also wish that we could have gotten a little more closure with Elisa and Ronan. Maybe the author had originally planned a book for them, but just never got there. Finally, I kind of wish the epilogue had been clear about whether the people in the present knew that THEIR Lauren was Lady Kenward - it wasnt 100% clear that they knew that. This was a great story...I so very much wish this author had written more.
