Book description
An entertaining read in some respects. The author chose to flesh out an obscure mystery of the Baueaux tapestry (the depiction of Ælfgifu and a certain cleric) and pose theoretical reasoning behind the struggles for the inheritance of the English throne from Edward the Confessor, including the reason for the meeting in Normandy of Harold Godwinson and William the Bastard, soon to be William the Conqueror. This was an enjoyable read for these reasons--despite the fact that Ive read a great deal about the Godwins, the Conquest and the questions of the inheritance--whether Edward really promised it to William, etc. The Bayeaux Tapestry, itself, is a marvelous document and there are all kinds of questions unanswered in it. Most of this book is based on historic fact, and that is its strength. The reason I didnt give it more stars is because the story-telling is somewhat stilted without first person narrative in natural conversation such as that I found in Bernard Corwells books, nor with the wit and easy flow of the dialog found in Arthur Duggans story (The Cunning of the Dove) of the same time period and many of the main figures of the time. The first third of the story is told in third person through the eyes of first Princess Ælfgifu, daughter of Ethelred II (Unread or Unready)by his first wife, also named Ælfgifu. The Princess Ælfgifu was second (this book) or third wife of Uhtred (from Wikipedia: Uchtred or Uhtred, called the Bold, (d. 1016) was the ealdorman of all Northumbria from 1006 to 1016, when he was assassinated. He was the son of Waltheof I, ealdorman of Bamburgh, whose ancient family had ruled from the castle of Bamburgh on the Northumbrian coast.--sounds like Cornwells Uhtred although his was during the time of Alfred the Great and his successors.)The rest is told through the eyes of a commoner, Cedric. I will leave my review at that so as not to spoil it for readers.
