4.5-starsIn 1939 author Olivia Manning boarded the Orient Express to travel to Bucharest. She had just married Reggie Smith, whom she had known for all of three weeks. Olivia was slim, dark haired and had a beautiful olive complexion. Reggie was a bear of a man, big and tall. He had been on leave, and during this time he met and married Olivia. He was employed by the British Council as a lecturer.In 1939 the heroine of this trilogy, Harriet, slim and dark, newly married to Guy Pringle (big and tall), after having met him three weeks previously, boards the Orient Express with her new husband. Guy had been on leave from his job in Bucharest - yes, you guessed it! - where he was employed by the British Council as a lecturer.Author Olivia and Reggie lived in Bucharest until it became imperative to get out, and even though Reggie was supposed to go to Egypt for his next assignment, they ended up in Athens, Greece. Ditto Harriet and Guy.Now this is a novel and not an autobiography, so dont accept all the details as fact - they are not. However, Ms Manning was there. She was in Bucharest when important historic events took place such as the assassination of Prime Minister Cãlinescu in Bucharest’s Chicken Market. She knows what she is writing about, and she does it well. The characterisation in this trilogy is outstanding. Several of the characters are modelled on real people, particularly Guy Pringle. Reggie Smith was said to be a large affable bloke, liked by all who met him; so is Guy Pringle. Some characters are fictitious, such as the larger than life half-Irish, half-White-Russian Prince Yakimov, an indolent, self-pitying, ace scrounger and gourmand who likes to refer to himself as poor old Yaki. Whilst there are many important events in this trilogy, the focus is most definitely on the characters.Book one, The Great Fortune, sets the scene. There are great descriptions of Bucharest which at that time was regarded as the Paris of the East. Gourmet food is purchased at the famous Dragomir’s, scrumptious meals are eaten at the various smart restaurants, delicious confections are eaten with tea at the cafes, and a variety of cocktails are consumed at pubs such as the English Pub in the L’Athénée Hotel where the English fraternity congregated for news as the war in Europe spread, and one country after another fell. In Bucharest not everyone was fat and flourishing; hundreds of poor homeless people froze to death. Ms Manning skilfully describes these contrasts and events.Harriet is shrewd, perceptive and says what she thinks. “Harriet, exasperated by the mildness of Guy’s protest asked: ‘Who has given this order? The Minister?’ Woolley started, surprised, it seemed, not only by the edge on her voice but by the fact she had a voice at all.” No, it’s a general order, like. I’ve sent me lady wife home as an example. That was enough for the other ladies.’” says Woolley. ”’Not for me, I’m afraid. I never follow examples.’” replies Harriet.Guy is amiable and kind. He loves all the world and all the world loves Guy. He doesn’t value possessions, but he values his friends. Everyone tells Harriet how lucky she is to be married to him. She knows that she is lucky, but is it what she wants? Is she happy? It doesn’t take long for Harriet to wonder whether she was wise to marry after such a short courtship. Guy is occupied with literature and his production of Troilus and Cressida into which he pours all his energy. (Reggie Smith also enjoyed acting and producing plays.) ”And there, Harriet thought, lay the strength of the production. Except for Yakimov and Guy, no one was called upon to act very much. Each player was playing himself. When the final curtain fell, the actors who received most applause were those who had been most themselves.” Those are Harriet’s thoughts at the end of the performance (she had of course been excluded from the production). And whilst everyone is on a high, Harriet frets about the fact that Paris has fallen - the curtain has come down not only on the play, but on Europe. Yaki, true to form, revels in congratulations received, but of course he doesn’t return the compliment. Yaki, a great opportunist, is very good at receiving and not giving; Guy is very good at giving to all and sundry. Much of The Great Fortune is about Guy and Harriet’s relationship, and the people in their circle. ###The Spoilt CityIn this volume major events take place in Rumania, and the political situation deteriorates dramatically. Where the English had been well liked in the first novel, they are now regarded as losers. They even find themselves forced out of The English Pub by the growing number of Germans, and have to congregate in the garden instead. Guy continues teaching, even running additional classes, and many of his students are Jews who are learning English in the hope of making a living elsewhere. However, the situation is becoming more and more precarious for the Jews and Ms Manning deftly describes the growing feeling of menace. As the political climate changes in Bucharest and the German invasion becomes imminent the English community is inevitably affected. It reaches a point where they start leaving, and as I was reading about Harriet and Guy I was thinking “Get out! Get out!” Once again Guy shows great concern for everyone else, but Harriet continues to feel very isolated. “She wanted to accuse him of selfishness, to point out that his desire to embrace the outside world was an infidelity and a self-indulgence, but she realised he would never understand what she meant.” Even her friend Bella who is married to a Rumanian avoids her, not because she doesn’t want to be friends, but because she does not wish to be seen fraternising with the now unpopular English. Yaki continues to be the same “poor old Yaki”, and he manages to stir up a considerable amount of mischief out of feelings of resentment because he feels the world owes him a very comfortably living with lots of rich food. Additional characters such as Professor Lord Pinkrose are introduced and once again the characterisation is excellent.###Friends and HeroesGuy has followed Harriet to Athens where they now try to re-establish themselves. Some of their old friends have also found their way to Athens, such as poor old Yaki. Harriet who in Bucharest absolutely loathed Yaki (who had lived with them for several months) now learns to accept him. However, she remains critical of others in their circle. Guy has to overcome various problems job-wise and Harriet as usual finds herself isolated. Guy has also been introduced to some left-winged students with whom he spends a lot of time in various cafes, whilst Harriet is left to her own devices. ”But she had married him; and perhaps, unawares, it was his difference she had married.”Initially the Greeks have several victories in their battles against the Italians, and there is much celebration. However, before long the situation once again deteriorates and Harriet, Guy and their English compatriots have to find a way out of Greece to safety. For now we have to say goodbye to the Pringles and their friends until we catch up with them in the next series of novels, The Levant Trilogy.Poor, poor old Yaki…
