A modern-day crime epic focusing on the efforts of two unorthodox police officers to bring down a drug gang at the height of New York City's crack cocaine epidemic of 10 years ago. The film also chronicles the rise and fall of Nino Brown, the antagonist of the film, in a light study of drug proliferation and its effects on poor neighborhoods. As numerous attempts to break the control of the gang fail and violence begins to escalate, how far will the police go to catch Nino Brown?
The gangster Nino has a gang who call themselves Cash Money Brothers. They get into the crack business and not before long they make a million dollars every week. A cop, Scotty, is after them. He tries to get into the gang by letting an ex-drug addict infiltrate the gang, but the attempt fails miserably. The only thing that remains is that Scotty himself becomes a drug pusher.
New Jack City is easily one of the best gangster movies of the '90's. It has some powerful things to say about drugs, crime and corruption. The story is about Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes), who in the beginning sees the potential of crack and some years later is the most powerful druglord on the streets. Scotty Appleton (Ice-T) and Peretti (Judd Nelson) are two cops determined to bring him down, and Scotty later goes undercover to get to him. Snipes is awesome as drug kingpin Brown, and is every bit as menacing and deadly as his character should be. Ice-T also gives a great performance as the streetsmart cop out to get him, and the supporting cast (Mario Van Peebles, Judd Nelson, Chris Rock) is excellent. The movie is tense, gripping, suspenseful and exciting. Catch Chris Rock in a career-defining performance in one of his earlier roles as Pookie. Mario Van Peebles did a great job of directing this film, and it went on to be one of the biggest hits of 1991. Watch this now for a great gangster movie with a strong social message
It&#39;s 1986. Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes) and his Cash Money Brothers become dominant in NYC with crack cocaine and violence. They take over the Carter apartment building as their own fortress. For the next few years, they become the scourge of the New Jack City. Stone (Mario Van Peebles) recruits renegade undercover cops Scotty Appleton (Ice-T) and Nick Peretti (Judd Nelson) to take down the gang. They clean up drug-addict Pookie (Chris Rock). Pookie infiltrates the gang for his friend Scotty.<br/><br/>It&#39;s an over-the-top gangster movie. It has the flashy gangster style. Nino Brown is a super villain. Ice-T pulls off a good hardcore streetwise cop but Judd Nelson is too fake overplaying his crazy cop role. Chris Rock is terrific. Most of times, it&#39;s got the fun Scarface-cool ridiculousness. Other times, it&#39;s goes overboard into bad campy ridiculousness. It is generally more cool than camp.
City loses some bearings in its second half, becoming a ragged collection of punchy action scenes. Big deal. It's also one of the most enjoyably ragged examples of fuzz vs. scuz since 1972's Across 110th Street. [8 Mar 1991, p.2D]
