A crime lord ascends to power and becomes megalomaniacal while a maverick police detective vows to stop him.
The gangster Nino has a gang who call themselves Cash Money Brothers. They get into the crack business and not before long they make a million dollars every week. A cop, Scotty, is after them. He tries to get into the gang by letting an ex-drug addict infiltrate the gang, but the attempt fails miserably. The only thing that remains is that Scotty himself becomes a drug pusher.
This depiction of war on drugs in "New Jack City" is pretty good. I like how they modernized a story which we have all heard or seen before in films such as Scarface. Its about a drug lord Nino Brown (Snipes) who takes over new jack city's drug enterprise, meanwhile director plays a cop who hires street cops Ice-T and Judd nelson to infiltrate his family and bring him down. Wesley Snipes is great in this role, maybe one of his best performances yet, I have never seen him so powerful. Ice-T was average, his performances are sort of typical to me, he was not bad though. I liked Allen Payne in a role as Nino's childhood friend who gives him the idea to start selling crack instead of coke. Bill Cobbs was funny to see as a stuttering gangster. Chris Rock was also good and pretty funny in his role as a dealer turned "crackhead" named Pookie. I thought Judd nelson was a bit of a joke, didn't really fit in and Mario Van Peebles is not the greatest actor, his acting was a bit weak. The direction in the film is pretty good, i liked Van Peebles' style, although I have heard many bad things about his other films. I thought Thomas lee Wright and Barry Michael Cooper's(Above the rim) script was one of the highlights, very good dialogues and sequence of events, great script. The story, although not extremely original, works in this film, and the acting is good for the most part, direction kept it interesting. 8/10
I had heard some very positive vibes about this movie, and thus twelve years after its release, I decided to check it out. Unfortunately for me, it didn&#39;t quite live up to the hype.<br/><br/>This movie had a lot of potential, and it was rather disappointing that it didn&#39;t make the cut with me. Don&#39;t get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie, but it left me with a sour taste after viewing it.<br/><br/>The problem with this movie is simply that too much goes on, too many people die, problems are too extreme, and money talks... too much. While there is very valid social message in this film, especially about the dismal state of the poor urban communities post-Reagan years and the failing war on drugs, however the plot really does compromise it with almost unbelievable violence. Point taken, in reality so many deaths within law enforcement would have brought a heaftier response. <br/><br/>It is obvious to me that many of the situation pictured in this movie do occur far more often than most would like to admit, but the combination of them all in the rather short time period that this movie runs in, is basically overkill.<br/><br/>Still, enjoyed Ice-T and it was a good watch. Odd ending - 6/10
The film's flamboyant portrait of Nino may be stereotypical, but Mr. Snipes makes it chilling.
