An innocent man becomes one of the most wanted criminals the world has ever known.
Though recognized for heroism as a lad, Ned Kelly can not escape the stigma of being the eldest of a brood sired by a known criminal. In days when an arrest equaled guilt and a conviction, his unfair imprisonment for horse thievery puts him steadfast, in the eyes of Victorian police, on the wrong side of things for life. With a sister unable to dissuade the unwanted advances of Constable Fitzpatrick, Ned, his brother Dan, and friends Joe Byrne and Steve Hart soon find themselves labeled "an outlaw gang" by the less-than-honorable constable. It's a designation they're apt to live up to after Ned's mother is unfairly arrested and sentenced to three years hard labor. In retaliation, the Kelly Gang strikes out against the oppressive Victorian government, with ultimately tragic results and passage into Australian folklore.
Ned Kelly is a tragedy and like all tragedies it is an uncomfortably sad movie. I did not enjoy it but I liked it. It's a drama, a violent expression of a fight for justice. However, it does evoke a sense of humor at situations where you wouldn't expect it. The legend of Ned Kelly starts with Ned's encounter with a policeman who accuses him of stealing a horse, insults his late father, and fires a shot at him, which misses. Jailed and released, he tries to rebuild his life until an embittered officer Fitzpatrick , whom he embarrassed by defending his sister from his advances decided to ruin him. I will not spoil this review with details but I'll give a brief description of its main characters. First is Joe Byrne (Orlando Bloom), Ned Kelly's right hand man and best friend. Joe is at first a person who advocates peaceful means, but when an arrest warrant is issued for Dan and Ned, he remains faithful to the gang and finally favors more radical means of getting justice. He is morally lax, loves to seduce women and, with his disarmingly good looks, succeeds in this. Unlike Ned who is illiterate he can read and write, even speak and understand Chinese. Near the end, he succumbs to his psychopathic tendencies, ending his life by walking in the midst of a volley of bullets to take a drink. Julia (Naomi Watts) is the young unfaithful wife of a cruel husband. She couldn't help falling in love with Ned but her love is shallow. Nonetheless, she proves herself indispensable when her home becomes a haven for the desperate Kelly gang in the absence of her husband. Francis Hare (Geoffrey Rush) is the ruthless, unyielding superintendent who would stop at nothing to capture Ned, burning the forest where the gang hides and poisoning the creek in it. Lastly, Ned Kelly (Heath Ledger) is the eldest brother of seven siblings. He acts as their father defending, correcting, and disciplining them and seems also to be the breadwinner of the family. He is not a saint and for his affair with Julia God punishes him with trouble in the family. As an outlaw he is kind to his victims, even defending them from a fellow gang member. But for his refusal to surrender to authorities he deems unjust, he becomes his mother's sorrow and the people's hero.
Repeatedly this movie is criticized by people claiming that Ned Kelly was just a murderer, yet how many of these people have actually studied the facts about Kelly's life? The murders that Kelly committed weren't part of a killing spree. It wasn't women and children shot, it was three police officers whose actions were later criticized by an inquiry, who had set off in pursuit of Kelly not to bring him to justice but to kill him for the reward. Compare this with the actions of Seargent Steele at the Glenrowan siege, who laughed out loud how he had - "shot Mrs Jones in the tits." This was reported by a fellow police officer. The woman at the time was trying to flee from the Inn, carrying a baby, and Steele shot her, her baby and killed her son in cold blood. Ned Kelly was not the only murderer of those times. So, people should consider the context of this when considering whether Kelly was a blood thirsty killer. Whether Kelly was right or wrong in his actions, he stood up against the authorities and paid with his life. If he was as evil a character as people claim, then he got his just rewards.

As for people wondering about Australians having a chip on their shoulder and putting down the British. Well, at the time Ned Kelly was at large, over three quarters of Australia's European population were convicts or children of convicts. Do you think that the cat of nine tails would endear them to the British? You should read about the the brutality of the English penal system, and wonder why it didn't create a whole bunch of brutal blood thirsty killers worse than Ned. I don't feel much sympathy for Brits who can't handle a few harmless jibes. If it is so hurtful to the English, perhaps they should remember Britains involvement in the slave trade. They should also remember that Australian soldiers paid with their lives defending England in two world wars. You reap what you sow.

Anyway, I just wish people wouldn't parrot the academics derision of the Kelly myth, and instead actually do some research themselves before pontificating about the moral issues involved. A lot of these criticisms are facile and less factual then the movie they criticize for being historically inaccurate. One of the reasons Australians love the myth is because it gets up people's noses.
Expertly combining the personal and the epic, Jordan has crafted an excellent historical saga that doesn't collapse under the weight of too much history.
