I started this weekend off with a series of goals. As the weekend has developed, a part of those goals has turned into finishing two books tonight. I bought this book a year ago and read it pretty regularly until right about the time iOS 7 came out, which more or less totally crashed the Kobo app I read my e-book copy on. Then, after spending hours reading just twenty or thirty pages each night of that book I just finished on Arabic science, I really, really realized that with books I could grasp a lot easier I could probably read a lot faster.And, finally, Kobo has their app more or less straightened out and it works pretty well, again, finally.This whole summer Ive kind of learned more secrets or more or less just better strategies to get the most out of reading and how to read effectively, day by day.Anyway, I really liked this book. It was very well written and really, really informative. Ive never really read a ton about film or directors in general and personally I thought this book was really good.I didnt know much about Wes Craven outside of his directing the first Nightmare on Elm Street and the Scream franchise.One of the first things that really, really got me was how influenced he was by art house and foreign cinema and also that he was a literature professor with hopes of being a novelist before he became a director.Probably the biggest thing I enjoyed about this book, something the author handled very well, was the correlation and mixing and meeting between art and exploitation in Wes Cravens films.Since Ive read one or two more books on film after I started this last year Ive learned more about how the film scene, particularly the horror and exploitation film scenes, developed in the second half of the 20th century into the 21st. And seeing how Wes Craven rides that line, totally blurring so many different things, I really liked.And I loved how the author really fleshed out how Wes Craven tried to show violence for more of what it is in real life as opposed to a stylized and for-your-entertainment depiction of violence for entertainment values, ala John Wayne films and jive like that. Ive never been a huge, huge cinema fan. Growing up of course I loved older horror films from the 1930s and 1940s classics to the classic 1980s slasher movies and of course the Scream franchise,But more or less, movies, after a certain point were never all that important to me.Thankfully, Ive been able and blessed to rediscover my older love of films and thats been a really rich and rewarding thing in my life. Especially, its worth adding, in reference to genre and art in dialogue. For awhile I really tried to shun and avoid genre pieces in any medium, but after seeing the first English Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie, all of that started more or less changing.(Also getting cable TV in my apartment so that I could watch the NBA really helped, too)And seeing how Wes Cravens vision for movies as well as art in general compares to someone like David Lynch is a really, really interesting experience.And after I started reading this book last year I started going out and seeking different directors besides John Carpenter and Wes Craven whose films I hadnt seen before and that was really cool and led to me falling in love with Julie Delpy which is an experience Im glad I was able to have.So, personally, I think the author really does a great job highlighting the different themes in Wes Cravens movies and cites all kinds of really good sources and examples and really does a great job with this book.I havent read any really serious books on film studies to compare it to, but overall Id say this is a great book and Im glad I stayed up till a little past 2 AM to finally finish it and review it after finishing and reviewing a book Ive been reading for the past week or so, too.Accomplishing goals feels very, very good and goes a long way towards making life very much worth living.
