These old Historical Association Pamphlets are great at doing that, providing the author with something a little longer than an academic journal article to set out a nice essay on a defined topic.Gillingham focuses here on the question of land and the development of the enduring strength of the principalities. The key factor, in his opinion, is the clusters of allodial land which where to form the basis of those principalities which began to emerge in this period, in part as a means of formalising actual authority - the reality of power on the ground - and as a means of providing rewards of status as compensation in the competition for titles.After reading Unification and Conquest the similarity with Anglo-Saxon England seems clear. Expansion provided lands to reward followers, raiding gained slaves to sell. The differences are also clear. Silver mines and the wealth of Italy were a temptation unavailable to the English kings, for them power could only come through the management and exploitation of the more limited resources within the bounds of their kingdom. The Norman and Angevin successions led to further divergence - the doing away of allod lands in England, the breaking of the connection between the title of Count or Earl and administrative control over the county and an intensified drive to exploit the Feudal dues to fund the family enterprise were not measures that the rulers of Germany could take.The family and conflicting notions of property perhaps were the heart of the Investiture Conflict(view spoiler)[ between secular authority and the Church over the right to invest ecclesiastics with churches, monasteries, or bishoprics (hide spoiler)]
