In the story, Mom! The Monsters!, by Liliana Cinetto and illustrated by Poly Bernatene, the main character is a little boy who is afraid of sleeping by himself because of all the monsters that are in his room. He thinks there are hairy monsters with sharp teeth, dreadful ghosts floating in the air, witches with messy hair, and huge ogres with huge hands. Just like every other mother would do, she reassures her son that there are no monsters in his room by vacuuming and dusting them all away. The little boy now thinks that the monsters wont come back because they are afraid of his mom. Throughout this book, there are always pictures of scary monsters and they are always being talked about. I would say this added to the mood of the book being very mysterious. It always seemed like I was going to turn the page and have a monster jump out at me from the way it was drawn. I also was never quite sure if one of these monsters was going to do something to the little boy which made it more mysterious. There is a page where the little boy is trying to sleep and the room is pitch black but you can see the eyes of all the monsters looking at him. It really left an uneasy feeling in me because as a kid this was always something that I worried about. I think the illustrations are the best part of this book. It might even be able to be a wordless picture book because they are so well done. A lot of the pages describing the monsters are all dark and creepy adding to the mysterious mood. The illustrations of the different monsters, witches, and ghosts are exactly how I would think they would look- big, bulging eyes, ugly teeth, long, pointy noses, and crazy hair. However, when the mother is reassuring the boy that there are no monsters, the colors are more bright and vibrant making the mood a little more cheerful. During this time, the little boys eyes become more relaxed and he has a smile on his face representing how he feels safe when he is around his mom.
