Che cos’è il matrimonio, se non una merdosa forma di rapacità , una terribile, ripugnante manifestazione di superbia.”Si capisce che il Roth che verrà sarà il grandissimo Roth che conosciamo, si capisce che lo scrittore deve ancora prendere le misure con la scrittura; il romanzo è prolisso, per la prima volta leggendo Roth ho sentito il desiderio di saltare delle pagine, ho provato un certo fastidio per l’eccessiva lungaggine, soprattutto verso la fine (ad esempio il dialogo finale dei coniugi Hertz), mentre il finale, come spesso accade nei romanzi di Roth, è eccezionale.Il titolo del romanzo richiama un’espressione ripetuta più volte in una scena da una dei protagonisti, Martha Reganhart, amante di Gabe Wallach, giovane professore ebreo che vorrebbe mettere ordine nella sua vita grazie all’educazione ai sentimenti che gli deriva dalla lettura di Henry James. Martha è divorziata malamente da uno pseudo artista che l’ha piantata con due figli dopo anni di maltrattamenti, lavora come cameriera per mantenere da sola i figli, è una donna allo sbando, Gabe si butta nella relazione con lei quasi come fosse “il buon samaritano”per riportarla sulla retta via, ma le cose non vanno, accade un evento terribile che pone fine alla loro storia, ma Gabe,- inquieto, indeciso, lacerato dal peso di una cultura ebraica che non sente sua, cresciuto in una famiglia con una madre autoritaria che all’inizio del romanzo leggiamo essere appena morta ed un padre dentista che, nella solitudine della vedovanza e nel vuoto lasciato da una moglie amata di cui si sentiva succube, si attacca morbosamente al figlio,- spinto da emozioni contrastanti torna da Martha, che nel frattempo ha iniziato un’altra storia, e viene cacciato via da lei che gli dice, tra l’altro:” … Per una volta sto agendo con buon senso. Ho lasciato andare e lasciato andare e lasciato andare… ho lasciato andare più che abbastanza… E adesso ho il diritto di aggrapparmi a qualcosa. ”.Tutti i protagonisti che gravitano intorno a Gabe, Martha, i coniugi Paul e Libby Hertz, lui ebreo lei cattolica, vagano in una realtà dai confini incerti, disorientati, ondivaghi, alla ricerca disperata di una stabilità che dia un senso al fluire incontrollato di eventi e di esperienze che è l’esistenza. Le insicurezze ed il malessere di ognuno di loro sono concentrati nelle parole dello zio Asher, quelle che ho riportato nel titolo del commento, nel suo incitamento a non aggrapparsi, a non diventare un “inscatolatore di esperienza”: il dramma sta tutto qua, nella maledetta istintiva necessità di aggrapparsi che domina le relazioni umane.Pure nel suo romanzo forse meno riuscito, Roth è sempre Roth.
