From the Preface:This work deals with Israels institutional presence in East Jerusalem in various fields - not all, not even most, of them. Because a volume on all aspects of the subject would by necessity be several times the length of this one, the author has selected some topics which were representative of the events in Jerusalem after the June 1967 Six Day War, and which interested him especially. Security, courts, and religious events, for example, were omitted.The study is also restricted in time to the first two and a half years of Israels annexation of East Jerusalem, although footnotes in many cases indicate the main trends of development in the next two years as well. A postscript, to be found at the end of the boo, fills in more information for 1971-72.The author of this study has lived in Jerusalem since 1941, when he enrolled in the Arab A-Nahda national college and moved in with an Arab family. After becoming the first Jewish graduate of the school, he continued his studies at the Hebrew University and then joined the staff of The Palestine (now Jerusalem) Post, as a reporter on Arab affairs.Since that day, hundreds of his articles on Arab live in the Holy City have appeared in the Post and Arabic and Hebrew newspapers. In 1947, his book Days and Nights in the Old City, was published. During the 1948-1967 period, the author followed events in East Jerusalem by carefully studying the Arab press and radio. On June 7, 19967, when shooting could still be heard in parts of the Holy City, he joined the first group of journalists permitted to cross the border into the Old City. Part of the material in this book has been published before in The Jerusalem Post and other Israeli newspapers. The author wishes to express his profound gratitude to the many East Jerusalemites who helped him to gather the material for this study...and to the dozens of officials in government, municipal and public bodies, Arabs and Jews alike, who supplied the necessary information and background data for this book.
