Very good book to gain a strategic understanding of how the war worked. Covers both theatres of war, and tells some details about some of the more interesting units, like the Mukti Bahini units, and the Ladakh Scouts. According to this, the Indians and Pakistanis had comparable militaries qualitatively, its just that the Indian military was larger and in a tactically superior position. Thats what the author explicitly states, but the actual description of the events makes it seem like Pakistan suffered from severe command and organizational problems as well. The Pakistanis were unable to fight a simmering internal insurgency in East Pakistan at the same time that they defended the borders in the east from numerically superior Indian troops. In the west, they planned a counter offensive into Punjab, but there is no reason to suspect that this was ever plausible. Really, the intention was to damage India enough to take pressure off the East in time for the international community to intervene.India took a bit of territory, liberated Bangladesh, and seemingly took fewer casualties but lost more equipment (?). India seems to have had a few minor instances of poor organization during the war but it didnt really effect the outcome. For instance the capture of Dhaka was unplanned and unordered and was the result of individual initiative on the part of the lower generals. They also didnt switch from offensive to defensive footing quickly enough at Fazilka. But the Pakistanis were even more poorly organized. Their leadership structure was too topheavy, and their army was just a total mess in the East. Thinly spread out and with broken up and intermixed units trying to defend a very long border against superior troop numbers, while occupying a hostile and violent native population. Given how utterly screwed they were, it makes it a little more comprehensible why they became genocidal.
