The "Nemesis of Medicine" was both a shock and a provocation when it was first published in 1975, at that time under the title "The Expropriation of Health". Illich had done nothing else but hold up a mirror to an overflowing and cancerous proliferating health and medical technocracy. With great detail and critical brilliance, it is shown, especially to the medical layman, how the various interest groups, such as the medical profession, the pharmaceutical industry and the ideology that accompanies them turn patients into addicted consumers and medicine into consumer goods. Alienated from the natural experience of health, illness and death, the definition of which we prefer to reserve for the rituals of the medical profession, we have thus succumbed to the mistaken belief that man is completely reparable. A book that is of oppressive topicality, especially in view of the current discussion about organ transplantation, artificial insemination, genetic engineering, etc.
