The Teen Idle (also known as the, Teen Idol, Idle Teen, or the American youth) is a female archetype portrayed by MARINA in the Electra Heart series.
The Teen Idle takes the general appearance of Electra Heart with blonde hair but noticeably missing the signature heart on her left cheek in the original 2011 photoshoot, as the younger Electra Heart, Teen Idle has not become the iconic Beauty Queen yet. The Homewrecker is also missing the heart on her cheek, perhaps indicating that Electra moves from Teen Idle to Homewrecker and narrated by Bubblegum Bitch.
The Teen Idle tends to wear her hair straight or wavy as opposed to tied up or short. The Teen Idle tends to wear t-shirts with skirts and has a young, outgoing appearance (as well as seeming sweet and innocent in most situations). The Teen Idle is also depicted as a party girl who drinks and generally tends to get caught up in banter.
Living Dead, Sex Yeah, see Electra struggling with her teenage years, with Teen Idle serving as that old self "dying" and coming alive again with Bubblegum Bitch, and Radioactive. They see her embrace a more ruthless selfish side making up for years lost.
A "Teen Idol" is a celebrity or other form of personality that is well-known and popular among teenage groups. They are respected by teenagers and are seen as sweet heart-throbs. Traditionally, a Teen Idol is a famous figure known for being a musician or actor, but they can also be locally well-known teenagers who are popular within their schools and societies.
However, Diamandis' Teen "Idle" is the opposite of this. She is portrayed as a teen with many regrets and a longing to be popular. The Teen Idle constantly contradicts herself and is split between the person she thinks she is, the person she wants to be, and other ideals she looks up to. She is the most confused of the archetypes. She represents many struggles that teenagers face, including drinking, sexuality, self-respect and confidence.

However, the final line of the chorus of Diamandis' Teen Idle states that when the Teen Idle dies, she comes alive; this literally means that once the teenage years have passed, the world opens up and the Teen Idle is no longer faced with these struggles. She finally becomes an adult.

Marina went to London Fashion Week in February 2011 and saw jumpers emblazoned with "Teen Idle" which inspired the song.[2]
In October 2011 Marina said she intended to do an exhibition for a gallery, with films she was making for the album and photography collections and the the first part of the campaign would focus on suburbia and housewives, however she had already released Fear and Loathing and Radioactive, an "Idle Teen" song by this point.[3] Later in January she said she had done the photoshoot, referring to the shoot in October 2011, and that the album was focusing on character types and "focused on 8 different people" that she had to do it in advance as it was a big shoot, she also said she had done a lot of the videos, which would have been Fear and Loathing, Radioactive, The Archetypes (song), Primadonna, Su-Barbie-A, though the latter two weren't out at the time.[4] Footage from these sessions were eventually used in EVOL though they appear very quickly and only for a few frames. She said in a June 2012 interview that she was pinpointing "character types" so perhaps she was using "Archetype" and "character types" interchangeably.[5]
In an October 2011 interview Marina said:[6] "She's a persona, a vehicle I'm using to explore American archetypes - the housewife, the beauty queen, the pin-up, the starlet."
A starlet is defined as "a young actress with aspirations to become a star." It can be assumed that the "starlet" archetype was a basis for a Teen Idol, the flip side to a idle teen.
In a June 2012 interview Marina said about The Archetypes and Su-Barbie-A:[7]
Marina said two months before that there would be more of the "home made" videos, as "that's what builds up the bulk of the message, and the whole vision, because sometimes I'm just crap at saying what I mean. So it’s much easier for me to do it in the form of a photograph or a video." It can be assumed the other three mini-videos we didn't get would be for the missing archetypes, Homewrecker, Teen Idle and Primadonna.[8]
