Amelia Grant

Dyspaurenia is a generalized term that means painful feelings during the sexual intercourse. This state can be noticed among both women and men, but its clinical picture and frequency differs much. Women suffer from dyspaurenia in 30% of cases, and among the men, it is diagnosed only in 1% of cases, so it is concerned mostly a female problem. The pain can appear in any moment of the intercourse.

It is important to understand that this pain is not actually the disease itself, but only the symptom of some other disease. Therefore, the right diagnostics of the disease and its proper treatment will help to get rid of the pain. The reasons of its occurrence can be subdivided into such categories:

1.      Inflammatory diseases.

2.      The consequences of surgical intrusions.

3.      Erosion.

4.      Atrophic states.

5.      Psychological disorders.

It is a very generalized classification too, but it allows at least to systematize the problem. In fact, dyspaurenia rarely occurs because of the one reason only. What are the actual reasons that can cause its appearance?

1.      Inflammatory diseases are caused by infectious agents: trichomonas, chlamydia, staphylococcus, candida fungus, Coli bacteria etc. Any part of the urogenital system can be inflamed. Edema is a usual symptom of the inflammatory process; it causes the narrowing of the vagina, so it feel painful during sex.

2.      After operation or the operational labor the scars might be left. The epithelium producing scar tissue cannot stretch, so during the sexual thrill, vaginal walls are stretching but the scars are not, it causes discomfort.

3.      Erosion is an open wound that localizes in the deeper part of vagina or on the cervix uteri. The touch of it causes understandable pain.

4.      Tumors and cysts are usually occur in the uterus or ovaries. They push on the surrounding tissues, and woman can feel deep pelvic pain during sex because of the tumor’s moving. Sometimes it is the only symptom of them.

5.      Atrophic states occur during the menopause or after surgical removal of the uterus or ovaries. They occur because of the stop of female hormones’ production.
