The space shuttle Churchill is assigned to observe the Halley's Comet under the command of Col. Tom Carlsen. They see a strange form attached to the comet and Carlsen goes with a team to investigate. They find three humanoid life forms in caskets and they bring them to the Churchill. However, Earth loses contact with the shuttle and the Space Research Center sends another spacecraft to search the Churchill. They find the crew dead and the shuttle burnt and one rescue pod missing. They bring the humanoids to Earth and soon Dr. Hans Fallada and his team discover that the Space Girl is a sort of vampire and drains the life force from people transforming them into zombies. When the authorities find that Col. Tom Carlsen has survived, they summon him to explain what happened in the Churchill. Carlsen tells an incredible story about the three aliens and he teams up with Col. Colin Caine trying to save mankind from the evil vampires from the space.
A space shuttle mission investigating Halley's Comet brings back a malevolent race of space vampires who transform most of London's population into zombies. The only survivor of the expedition and British authorities attempt to capture a mysterious but beautiful alien woman who appears responsible.
A very peculiar film, this: as previous reviewers have mentioned, it is brimming over with ideas and over-specific exposition, and as a result of this the slash-slash-slash-style editing leaves much to be desired. It feels very much as if there was genuine thought and intelligence behind the project, but that the superabundance of material overwhelmed the director: a classic example of this is where Carlsen reveals to the unfortunately-named Doctor Fallada that he is in psychic contact with the vampire; Fallada responds with "Then you may be able to lead us to her...if I were to hypnotise you", whereupon a cursory secondary character chimes in with "He's tired - perhaps in the morning." Two seconds later, before the scene even fades out? It's morning, and hey, who'd have guessed it, there's Carlsen and Doctor Fallada with some kind of shiny oscillating mirror - "You are feeling sleepy." I defy anybody not to laugh at that transition.

Other unintentionally funny scenes do crop up - Steve Railsbeck's over-acting in some places lowers the tone beautifully, most notably in a scene with Patrick Stewart, where the camera juxtaposes the latter with Mathilda May and Railsbeck protesting hysterically "Let me go! Let me go!" before the inevitably comic kiss arrives. Frank Finlay is also quite terrible in much of this film, and hams it up with the best of them.

Yet all this is besides the point - this is a tremendous film in places. The opening shots of the approach to Halley's Comet are terrific; Mathilda May is as beautiful as she is convincing and enigmatic; Railsbeck's awfulness is more than compensated for his brilliance in the scenes on board the Churchill; the dystopian shots of London in chaos as the terrible spreading form of the alien ship deploys above it...all amazing. This is a film it is all too easy to dismiss - it might have been better, true, but in places it is unsurpassably good.
This film has a very special place in my heart. To sit back and read all the reviews from people who really love it is heart warming. To read the ones that rip it to shreds, I like them too. I just love the heated debate this film inspires even to this day. I must admit I would like to remake this story but more to the original Colin Wilson novel.

To watch the film and remember the awesome time I had working at Elstree Studios with people people who had worked on the original 'Star Wars' trilogy makes me realise how lucky I was to spend several months on this playing a Walking Shrival. My first acting job. A dream come true playing in a twenty five million dollar playground.

https://www.facebook.com/lifeforcewalkingshrival/

2 real possibilities, firstly that they're both dead and their energy released as with the rest of the victims. Secondly that they are still alive and preserved on the ship and will return with Halley's comet in the mid 21st centuary Open to interpretation, either the energy of the human souls has been used to revive the vampires in their crystal coffins or the humans have actually become the new vampires and are preserved until the ship returns to Earth with Halley's comet. The only released version in Germany e.g. is the Theatrical Version. In the UK and US on the other hand, the only available DVD Version is the longer Original Version, referred to as Director's Cut. Lots of footage got cut out but most of the cuts were probably made for pace. Lots of scenes refering to vampires have been removed. Apart from that, the investigations of incidents with vampires, which have been cut out from the Theatrical Version, are much shorter as well. Some scenes really benefit from this because the timing is better but in most cases, the Director's Cut is the better and more convincing version. In total there are more than 100 hundred differences between both versions resulting in a difference of more than 14 minutes. a5c7b9f00b
