The movie is about the great historical figure Vasil Levski. It follows five different plot lines: his attitude towards himself; his attitude towards the religion; the relationship with his mother, Gina; the relationship with his loved one, Ana; and the plans for freeing Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire. The movie starts in 1848 and follows Vasil Levski's whole life until his hanging in 1873.
LEVSKI is a classic tale about the life and death of the greatest Bulgarian revolutionary Vasil Levski. The story starts in 1841, during the darkest period of the Turkish yoke. Five-year-old Levski sees Turks raping and slaughtering young women in a small church and the survival of a little baby boy, the son of a high-ranking Turkish officer. The life stories of the two boys become intertwined as they grow into young men. After his father`s death Levski enters a monastery to become a monk, but the education he receives there makes him realize how tragic the plight of his people is and understand that they are slaves of the cruel rule of an empire whose elite have lost themselves in a world of meaningless existence. He takes the decision to leave religious life and dedicates himself to the idea of liberating his beloved motherland. Levski gets trained as a legionnaire and joins the rebellion movement. Later he succeeds in setting up more than 400 revolutionary committees all over the country when one of his apostles attacks a convoy of the Turkish postal service. That leads to a series of treacherous acts and many of his followers are killed. The feeling of guilt about these deaths, the disappointment in the mentality of his people whose minds are as difficult to reach as a stone wall and the realization that perhaps he is years ahead of his time made Levski sacrifice himself and his own life in the name of the survival of the revolution by turning himself in to the Turks.
The film begins inside a church. Ottoman soldiers and their mustaches have their swords drawn, menacing Bulgarkas with death and implied defilement. So far, so legible. The imagery of a leering Turk raping an innocent Bulgarian maiden in Christ's house is imagery even I can understand. Ultimately, the tragedy of Dqakon Levski, beyond the fact that it nearly made me suicidal, is that its idiotic remaking of Vasil Levski into a holy superhero dishonors his real status as a freedom fighter. The film actually makes him seem like less of a man, rather than more.
This movie has BOLLYWOOD written all over it. An embarrassment, it makes a complete mockery of Bulgarian history. Factually inaccurate, it requires a Phd in history to follow the hundreds of characters that drift in and out of focus, but what's worse is that the even its delusional message is poorly delivered. Fragmented, with too many ideas presented in too few scenes, awful lot of tangents and the director is part of the cast. Do you need more? The soundtrack is tacky and over the edge. Far worse than the cheapest Bollywood production. Please, do not form any opinions on Bulgarian history or culture based on this absolutely awful movie.
