Two days after watching the pretty bad pilot episode of the reboot of "MacGyver", I sat down to watch this television version of the "Lethal Weapon" movie franchise. I actually had a little hope for this, seeing that writer Shane Black - who wrote the screenplays for the first two entries in the movie series - contributed to writing the pilot episode of this show. But for the most part, the story and the characters were nothing that we hadn't seen before. In fairness, Black's teleplay did have a few good ideas here and there (like a car chase finding its way to entering an active speedway), but they were pretty much botched in actual execution by the director and the actors. The action wasn't very exciting (it was usually over almost as soon as it started, for one thing). Also, the casting of the two leads was botched. Clayne Crawford was missing Mel Gibson's charisma (when Gibson was likable, that is), and his sometimes resemblance to Leonardo DiCaprio didn't help. Damon Wayans seemed to realize that his surroundings were not of high quality and seemed to be going on autopilot. In short, this is a pretty poor action drama, one that really does not deserve the "Lethal Weapon" brand.
The casting of Riggs and Murtagh makes this show what it is. Supporting cast good too. It has heart and soul. It's a good old fashioned cop show that updates the early films of Gibson and Glover franchise. The only aspect that is a bit weak is Riggs' compulsory visits to the 'shrink', who no doubt will become a love interest - though I'm hoping the writers will avoid that clichéd storyline. Riggs' love for his deceased wife is what makes his character interesting when played against Murtagh's family man. Thank you ITV for picking up this show, it's a pleasure to watch.
