Graphic novel collecting together new X-Men #134-38, cast list: Cyclops, Professor X, Jean Grey, Beast, Wolverine and Emma Frost.My main criticism of the previous volume was its lack of cohesion. This one does the complete opposite, focusing almost entirely on one story. The main body of this volume looks at the new teen mutants reaction to the murder of mutant fashion designer Jumbo Carnation. They think he was beaten to death by a gang of humans, whereas the truth is that he ODed on a new mutant drug called Kick. A faction of students led by QQ a genius made unstable by learning that he was adopted, create a violent vigilante gang intent on killing humans and ramping up human/mutant hostilities. Professor X has arranged an open day at the school and the gang plan to sabotage it.Sub plots include Jeans growing Phoenix powers, Cyclops starting up a psychic affair with Emma Frost, Beast dealing with becoming a gay mutant icon (even though he only came out as being gay to be provocative) and a group of the freakiest and most difficult mutants learning to work together - Angel and Beak have a shock when Angel reveals shes pregnant! The U-Men are also hovering in the background - with their obsession of stealing and grafting on mutant body parts to become some new third species.While I like the fact that this follows one story, it is very much a soap opera plot - Scott & Jeans marriage breakdown, Emma Frost coming on like a bitch from Dynasty, teen pregnancy, QQs rebellious angst, Beasts is he gay or isnt he? - theres very little superhero stuff in this one. I found it all a bit whiney and wanted more action. Still the characters were interesting enough to hold my attention and the artwork wasnt bad.
