I wanted to like this book, because Homes is a pretty solid writer, but theres just no getting around the fact that the book as written has almost nothing to do with Los Angeles. The first chapter is all about the authors fear of flying. Um, okay. Then she flies to LA, checks into the Chateau Marmont, and basically never leaves. How original. Instead of bothering to get off her butt and explore the sprawling metropolis that is LA, she interviews staff at the Chateau Marmont and makes a bunch of half-hearted metaphors equating the hotel to the entire city. Besides that, she interviews a dude who performs the Briss for LA families, talks to some old people at a retirement home, and hangs out with a postal worker. Are you effing kidding me? Seriously, the author spends almost an entire chapter discussing what its like to be a postal worker, with no indication whatsoever that shes trying to make a point. Which would be fine if it were entertaining, but it is, as one might expect, painfully boring.Whats obviously happening here is that Homes got a writing assignment, decided her heart wasnt in it, then realized that such apathy, so long as it occurs in the context of the Chateau Marmont, is the perfect symbol of LA life. Except that its not, not even a little bit, the result being that this book is an annoying waste of time for anybody in search of actual content.
