Cheap Raw Materials by Milton Meltzer is my nonfiction book for second quarter. Milton Meltzer had the purpose to inform his readers about the exploitation and abuse of child labor in the United States. He has a strong opinion about this type of cruelty and wants to share it with the world. The theme of this book is sorrow and redemption. Milton Meltzer hopes to fix the problems about child labor. He wishes to solve the sadness of these little kids and send the message of redemption. He believes that we need to redeem ourselves and treat these kids the way they should be treated. Little kids like these should not be working. These kids are all being dearly mistreated. This book taught me that these kinds of awful things happen in America, which I did not know. His style is simply informative and sharp. A good example of this style is: “At the wages a father worked for, he could not afford to send his children to school” (60). Looking at this quote, you can see that he is simply trying to inform his readers and he doesn’t add too much extra detail. His style is short and to the point. He only tells about the important information and the rest simply does not matter to him. He is teaching his readers in a very effective way and that is why he is so popular. Meltzer is a very good writer with a very good style. Meltzer’s opinion on this topic is very strong and one-sided. He will not see this child cruelty in a good way ever and he refuses to let down. To prove this, I will show you the following quote: “The number able to read and write, in a distinguishable way, was shockingly small, and very many could neither read nor write even their own names,” (53). This quote shows how detailed he is willing to write to be able to draw a picture of how awful this is and how almost no children were illiterate. He is not proud of how people have ignored the fact that these children are so deprived of knowledge. He uses run-on sentences to make sure that we, the readers, understand how many kids were not able to do simple things in school because most didn’t go to school.I enjoyed this book, but not tremendously. I liked how strong the message was that came with it but it still wasn’t really my favorite book. I usually enjoy reading books that have a storyline. This book doesn’t really remind me of anything I’ve read in the past. Overall, I would rate this book four stars and I would recommend it to my friends.
