The world's finest heroes found the Justice League in order to stop an alien invasion of Earth.
War is closely based on a comic book story by Geoff Johns, a rather mediocre but curiously highly rated writer. It is a pity that Johns tin ear for dialogue and weak characterisation were not improved upon. In Johns' hands, the Justice League could be renamed the Leadue Of Jerks since they are all annoying and arrogant. They all talk in the same way: in short, sarcastic and rather emotionally detached sentences. "You're strong." says Superman to Wonder Woman in a condescending way. "I know." Is her curt reply.

Johns seems to think such things as this makes his "characters" (actually they are all the same character) smart. They're clever and they know they're clever- the only problem is that they are uttering banalities.

One such banality is "we've got this!" The League of Jerks new battle cry, an embarrassing attempt to imitate "Avengers assemble!"

The only real change from the Johns original is the substitution of Captain Marvel (here called Shazam) for Aquaman. This is no improvement, however, since he is quite as annoying as the rest of them. We first see him as his alter ego, 10 year old Billy Batson (although no name or background is given) sneaking into a football game; he subsequently steals a player's shirt. So CM is now a petty thief? Some superhero. We actually do not have any idea who he is until, without explanation, he shouts Shazam and transforms into CM or rather a darker version of CM who now sports a hoodie.

Likewise Wonder Woman, who for some reason is given a sword to wield, is seen publicly humiliating a man who criticised her and then terrorising an ice cream vendor and obtaining by coercion a "free" ice cream. Both these things are played for laughs. She's a woman, so spiteful behaviour is actually empowerment. The man who is humiliated claimed that superheroes are a menace, that's a joke, right? Yet in the very next scene we see Batman and Green Lantern fight Superman and lay waste the city causing millions of dollars of damage. I would like to think that Johns was a good enough writer to have deliberately juxtaposed these scenes, but there is nothing else here to suggest that. Johns seemingly believes any criticism of all powerful beings is small minded bigotry and deserves to be pilloried.

Superman acts rather unchivalrously throughout. On meeting Batman, he peeks under Batman's cowl using his x-ray vision, then blurts out Batman's secret identity in front of the Flash. So much for decency.

The only character who comes out at all well is Cyborg, a second rate hero who has only been included in the League of Jerks because of its diversity outreach programme. It says a lot for the values of modern comics that he is the only one given a backstory or any integrity. Unfortunately way too much time is spend on his origin story.

This at least deflects from the underwhelming appearance of the villain, Darkseid, one of DC's great creations who is here simply a one dimensional monster with eye beams.

The original comic was redeemed by good artwork, but the art here is only adequate.
I bought this film for my kids thinking they would enjoy some superhero entertainment. I sat down to watch this with my 9 year old son and in the first five minutes I wanted to turn it off and never air it again. During that first five minutes a civilian, Batman and Green Lantern all had to use profanity as if to make the program more adult like. More juvenile is more like it. It only gets worse when enters Wonder Woman, who is being protested in front of the White House and told that she dresses like a whore. Then she lassos the main name caller, forcing him to tell the truth and that he's a cross dresser who enjoys dressing just like her. I can't believe how bad the media has gotten these days! Is all this crude and immoral behavior really necessary to entertain people anymore? If that isn't bad enough, the entire story line and script are less than a sophomoric effort and the characters are hardly icons worth looking up to. Instead they are all self centered, egotistical, buffoons acting more like street punks. This is a real shame and it will be the last time I buy an animated feature like this for my kids. I don't teach my children to curse and act like that and I don't expect the media to either. It certainly isn't the superhero crew I grew up with and wanted to be like when I was a kid.
