Girls as young as 10-years-old will be eligible to take part in new ‘Miss Teen Ireland’ categories in October.
Girls between 10-14 years will compete to become Junior Miss Ireland, while teenagers aged 14-19 battle for the Miss Teen Ireland crown.
Irish-American founder Jennie Lynch said to the Sunday Independent: ‘This year we are expecting between 60 and 75 participants overall.’ 
Jennie said Ireland has a negative perception of child pageants because of US-based shows like Toddlers and Tiaras. 
She said she continues to do pageants in Ireland to ‘build self-esteem’ for young girls.
Despite wanting ’12-year-old’s to look like 12-year-old’s’, Jennie said there are no restrictions on make-up and accessories.
Unlike US pageants, there is no swimsuit round for minors, as the contenders wishing to take part in a swimsuit round must be over 18.
The pageant founder dismissed claims that pageants contribute to poor body image for participants, stating she continues to do shows here to ‘build self-esteem’.
The cost for competitors is €160, with planning underway for a number of adult divisions for the event which will be held in Roganstown Hotel in Swords.
