Its all about intent, isn't it?

If you have a film intended to reach some depth, the intent can be simply what the artists trust and if they are deep themselves AND good artists we get something valuable. I would never discount this, and many of my favorite film experiences are from films that are smarter or more emotionally worthy than the filmmaker's explanation would be.

But many times what you can get out is no more than what was put in by design, depending on the type of film. This is such a type. Hollywood is quite capable of doing things that have value, that thrill. And to my mind, merely advancing the cinematic vocabulary is good enough. "Speed racer" and "Transformers" are worthwhile on this account.

But here the intent has only two dimensions. The first is obvious, to bring all the old, more blatant 3D effects from the 50s and 60s to the modern audience. I saw nothing that thrilled me on this score, nothing.

The other intent is more interesting. If you want to have a PG film and appeal to young males, you have to have sex in there somehow, right? I can envision the script doctor conferences on this. There's the selection of the girl of course: blond, fit. She reports that they auditioned her 25 times, and considered hundreds. Her primary asset seems to be her mouth, carefully made up to resemble Cate Blanchett's. Look at photos of her from elsewhere and its pretty obvious the work they did.

There's the script devices to tease, and the images. The story is pretty obvious, capable, strong woman. Desirable, resourceful. There's some competition between the adult Frasier and the 13 year old, which I am sure was engineered and thoroughly tested. More subtle are the images: the vaginal flower that threatens. The fish that threatens to bite her tightly clad butt. The image of her thrusting to drive the train through an exhilarating ride. The subsequent episode where she negotiates through a stormy sea with snakelike monsters threatening. Do not suppose any of this is accidental.

Ted's Evaluation -- 1 of 3: You can find something better to do with this part of your life.
I must not decide to see 3D movies in 2D simply because I can't see Hellboy2 Okay (in 2D) retelling of the Jules Verne classic has Brendon Fraser as a geologist who's brother has been missing for ten years. As the university Fraser is teaching at is getting ready to close down his lab, his nephew turns up to spend a few days with him. through circumstances he opens his brothers copy of the Verne book and finds it full of notes. This leads Fraser and his nephew to Iceland where, along with the daughter of a scientist they meet along the way, they end up going to the center of the planet.

Its a diverting romp thats reasonably close to the basic plot of the novel. The performances are good even if the roles are unremarkable. There is a minimal amount of tension, but not a great deal since this isn't really a movie but a ride or experience and its plotting is as safe and harmless as ride a Disneyland.

Filmed with every intention of being seen in 3D this loses a great deal in 2D. Its not bad in 2D but it plays more like a harmless kids film then the cinematic version of a thrill ride. To be certain this will look great in 3D even if most of the effects and backgrounds are obviously CGI. There's enough things to make you jump and duck- effects that are completely lost in 2D- and will be more so once this hits TV and DVD.

Worth a trip to the multiplex if you're going to see it in 3D. If you're not going for the full effect wait for cable, of hope they do release this in some form of 3D on DVD.

6ish out of 10 in 2D. 7.something in 3D.
If the 3D here is better than average, SLIGHTLY, the rest of the movie brings it way, way down--not quite to the center of the earth, but at least a good six feet under.
Although Journey to the Center of the Earth (Voyage au centre de la Terre) (1864) was written by French science fiction writer Jules Verne [1828-1905], the movie doesn't actually follow the book. The basic premise of the movie is that Jules Verne's books actually happened and are not just works of fiction. The actual book, Journey to the Center of the Earth, is used by the main characters as a guideline for their own voyage. No, it is actually only in 3D where theaters have a RealD digital projector. So, IMAX does not present this film in 3D. Otherwise the movie is also available in 2D at normal theaters. The story is essentially identical, but the 3D version was shot using a slightly different script to emphasize its 3D effects. The 3D version is also rated PG-13 (for some bloody sci-fi violence), in contrast to the PG the 2D version received. a5c7b9f00b
