KYOTO -- A woman and her son were arrested on Jan. 22 on suspicion of obstructing the business of hotels and other facilities by repeatedly booking and ditching reservations online to illicitly obtain gift points worth some 1.92 million yen, police said.
Yukiko Kishida, 51, who describes herself as being self-employed, and her son Yukihiro Kishida, 30, who says he is a company worker, stand accused of fraudulent obstruction of business and unauthorized creation and use of private electromagnetic records.
The Kyoto Prefectural Police cybercrime division alleges that the duo made a total of 2,215 fictitious reservations at 463 hotels and other facilities across Japan through a hotel booking website, and canceled them without notice between February and October 2019. Through the fraudulent maneuver, the pair is suspected to have acquired customer reward points that are given when making reservations, which were worth some 1.92 million yen in total.
The pair is specifically accused of making false reservations at four hotels in the city of Kyoto through the popular booking site, Ikyu.com, when they were staying at a hotel in the central Japan city of Nagano on Aug. 28, 2019. They subsequently canceled the reservations for the guest rooms -- whose rate totaled 82,220 yen -- without notice, thereby obstructing the hotels' businesses.
"We didn't team up with each other to commit any crimes. I don't remember the details," the mother was quoted as telling investigators. Her son, meanwhile, has admitted to the allegations against them, saying, "My mother and I used pseudonyms and booked hotels together."
According to the prefectural police, the total rate of hotel rooms that the duo allegedly booked and canceled between Feb. 25 and Oct. 26, 2019 totaled some 81.6 million yen. When making the 2,215 phony reservations, the pair were given "T points," a type of customer reward points, for 395 bookings as the operators of those facilities forgot to nullify their points or did not cancel them for other reasons. Under the "T Point" reward point system, which is run by Culture Convenience Club Co., people can earn and spend points when shopping online and at partner stores across the country.
The mother and son, who have no fixed address, moved from one hotel to another in areas including Kansai in western Japan and apparently used the gift points to pay for their hotel rooms and buy food and drinks at convenience stores.
Ikyu Corp., the Tokyo-based operator of Ikyu.com., reported the damage to prefectural police by way of the Japan Cybercrime Control Center on Aug. 20, 2019, notifying police that someone was fraudulently acquiring points by making false reservations.
