"The awakening of a new era"

Earlier this year at Mobile World Congress (MWC), Bolivian tech company Jala Partners announced a partnership with Jolla to power a new Sailfish OS smartphone called Accione. Recently Jala has updated their Accione website to announce a three day event with press conference and keynotes including Jolla and Qualcomm. Jolla's keynote will be presented by CEO and Co-founder Sami Pienimäki. The event will take place in Cochabamba, Bolivia, October 12 - 14 with the slogan "El despertar a una nueva era" (The awakening of a new era).

Jala decided to use Jolla's Sailfish OS because of its openness and the fact that it allows full control over security features. The company added that its goal was to build an independent regional mobile ecosystem not only for Bolivia, but also for other Latin American countries.

During the partnership announcement with Jolla, Jalsoft CEO Jorge Lopez said: "Because Latin America is technologically dependent and an importer of technology in the form of finished products, not producing high technology itself, it faces the ever-‐increasing gap between the so-‐called 'developed countries' and those that must import technology. [...] In spite of this fact, to access the same level of technology, Latin American people must pay much higher prices than Americans or Europeans for the same product. The extra cost is a direct result of not owning the intellectual property. We are forced to pay, at the very least, high import taxes (approx. 40% in Bolivia). The lack of intellectual property right keeps us one step behind."
