See, that’s what the app is perfect for.
Sounds perfect Wahhhh, I don’t wanna
In 2001 I listened to Maya Angelou speak in the gymnasium of a community college. I laughed, I cried, I felt like I needed to burn my bra. I was empowered and inspired. She was a woman, phenomenally.
Fast forward to the age of the internet and accessibility of googling quotes. My need for books diminished and my desire to read a book is, let’s just say embarrassing. My Maya Angelou fan girl status is not what it was 13 years ago, but I will always remember the impact she had on that 19 year old girl.
You know how you set expectations of what a morning at the park includes? Then your kid sits in a tunnel for 10 minutes pretending sticks are a wand, a drum stick, and then chopsticks. And you think, she’s way cooler than I’ll ever be.
I have been on a real sugar binge lately. The ghost of Easter past is still haunting my cabinets. The other night I ate my favorite Boston cream donut from my favorite bakery and chased it with a cookie Dave insisted we needed. I woke up the next day feeling tired and achy so I poured my self a bowl of Fruity O’s with sweetened Almond milk and blamed the weather.
Not only have I physically felt the affects of the sugar but mentally I’ve felt less than pleasant.
So last night after eating a fudge fancy and feeling guilty about it, I grabbed a hand full of jelly beans and went to bed.
I woke up this morning feeling anxious and irritable and tired. So so tired. I made my green drink smoothie;
¼ cup *unsweetened* almond milk
½ tsp vanilla extract
¼ tsp ground cinnamon
1 frozen banana (if banana is not frozen throw in a handful of ice cubes)
½ avocado
Handful of spinach
Then for second breakfast (pictured above) I got creative. I had bought a carton of pre-sliced butternut squash from Trader Joe’s because I like anything that’s already peeled and cut for me. This recipe originally called for sweet potato. It’s your kitchen do what ever you want.
2 tsp coconut oil
2 tsp sea salt
2 tsp dried parsley
Cinnamon to taste
Let oil melt in skillet
Stir in butternut squash evenly in oil
Add in sea salt, parsley, and cinnamon
Cook on medium heat covered for about 20-25 mins depending on taste preference.
Avery is not a vegetable eater. Every time she eats one of those spinach and kale filled pouches I secretly say, “Sucker!” As you can see, even she enjoyed it.
I also fried an egg for a little extra protein.
Some women loves shoes. I love chemical free products. So excited about my first bundle from @honest. 🌍♻️
It’s funny, the things you become attached to in your life. When Dave and I were in biology class together in jr. College he wrote, D+B on my notebook. I held onto that tiny scribble for years! Even when we weren’t together it was packed away in my bedroom. I believe that piece of paper was lost in a fire at my Dad’s house and Dave still asked me to marry him.
My mom bought me a pair of slippers for Christmas 3 months after Avery was born. I have worn them every day. They have been spit up on, “loved on” by the cat, and have moved three times in their short lifetime. The bottoms are torn they are deflating a bit and Avery thinks she’s the Queen of the castle trying to walk in them. However, I can’t part with them. The sentimental value of being a new mom wearing them and a busy mom chasing a toddler around the house in them has me all sorts of emotional. They are just slippers right? Just black fuzzy Jessica Simpson slippers from Macy’s.
During Avery’s nap today I wanted to write this long heartfelt post about what it means to be a mother. Then I made a bagel and caught up on ‘Once Upon A Time.’ Let’s talk about Captain Hook and his chest hair…
Which then led me to believe that I shouldn’t be taking personal time out for myself. Shouldn’t I be cleaning and making oatmeal from scratch? That thought led me to this, I’ve done so many things wrong as a mother since Avery was born…and we have successfully made it to this point.
In my opinion social media has formed mom’s into this supportive community. We cheer each other on, we praise how cute each other’s kids are. Then at the same time we are shaking our heads and disagreeing with everyone’s parenting skills. While we’re all trying to find that balance of who we were before kids and who we are with kids we are pinning woman against woman. Frankly, I don’t think any of us are doing it right. Here is my top 5 (in no particular order) things I’ve done wrong as a Mother.

1. I co-slept.
Once Dave rolled on me while we were sleeping and my life flashed before me.
I vowed I would never let a baby in my bed. Flash forward to a nursing mother recovering from a c-section and you get a bed for three.
2. I became a hermit. By the time I got the hang of getting us both ready and out of the house she was a one year old. It was easier for us to stay inside and hang out in our pjs all day. This caused major anxiety for me. I didn’t want to be around many people and relied on Dave to be my safety net while we were out.
3. I didn’t follow through with projects.
This is the Pinterest discussion. Sure it’s helpful. It has millions of ideas. But nothing is original anymore. I’ve seen the same class Valentine’s Day gift 10 times on Facebook. Have you noticed we talk about Pinterest like it’s a person, “Pinterest told me to curl my hair with a toilet paper roll”.
This past Christmas I tried to trace Avery’s hands and make a reindeer ornament for all the Grandparents. She wouldn’t keep her hand straight and I got frustrated. If you follow me on Instagram I posted the outcome.

Today only at Target you can save 40% off of Merona’s men’s and womens’s apparel. Last week I picked up the top pictured and this fun cycle print.
I love Easter! It’s fun, quiche is involved, and jelly bean calories don’t count.
Watching a toddler run around in her puffy dress is enough to make me wish Easter was every Sunday.
Hunter-appreciation anon here. I have to add that I find your affinity for bats to be, well, batshit crazy. That doesn’t change my earlier assessment of your general awesomeness, though.
… although FYI women don’t generally enjoy being told that they are (or are acting or are in any way associated with being) batshit crazy. There’s a whole patriarchal history there that raises the hackles.
But seriously, bats should be better appreciated. I like them because they’re cute and have such a weird design, but they’re also one of the world’s major pollinators. The peaches and bananas of the world, in particular, rely on bats. They’re also excellent chemical-free pest control!
So if you like fruit and mosquito-free evenings, thank a bat.
P.S. I’m razzing you a little here, anon, but I do appreciate the nice messages you’ve left … even if we disagree about bats
