In the last moments of World War II, a secret Nazi space program evaded destruction by fleeing to the Dark Side of the Moon. During 70 years of utter secrecy, the Nazis construct a gigantic space fortress with a massive armada of flying saucers.

Hollywood Nazis are strange creatures. They are smart enough to invent the most amazing machines, but still totally dumb and robot-like. That's actually a very accurate description of this movie. Technically it sometimes looks really good: the space ships, the exploding Zeppelins in outer space, the death star "Götterdämmerung". But it's unlikely that any humans were involved in the creation of the script. Words like "stupid" and "boring" don't even begin to describe it. There is no internal logic, you should never ask yourself "Why?" or "How?" or anything. It's no coincidence that the production of "Iron Sky" started shortly after the airing of South Park's "Cartoon Wars" in 2006, it's very likely that - just as shown in this episode - manatees choosing idea balls were used as writing staff. Of course the acting is very cartoonish, the music by Laibach is totally wasted, the political views are those of sophomoric teenagers. Americans annoyed by the portrayal of their country in this picture should consider this: The European Union and the German state participated in the financing of this spaced out garbage. In Iron Sky, it's election season in the US and because they haven't been there in decades decide to launch another mission to the moon with a black guy on board. They also seek some fantastic energy source called Helium 3. The other astronaut finds something striking as he peeks into a crater. He's shot soon thereafter. The black guy is captured. Nazis escaped after WWII to the dark side of the moon and are ready to "invade" earth. Renate is a lovely teacher who teaches little Nazis all about their doctrine. Meanwhile the Nazis are confused by the black guy and turn him white as a favor. He isn't happy. But Renate likes him. Adler is one of the main Nazis under the Fuhrer and goes to earth together with Renate and the black guy to prepare the invasion. There he meets Vivian Wagner who is a campaign manager for the president seeking reelection. She sees an opportunity in using Adler for her purposes. And indeed his Nazi rhetoric is adopted by the President. Also good for a campaign is war and when the Nazis invade, the US takes leadership in the war against the moon Nazis, with the help of the rest of the world. The Fuhrer suddenly appears in the US but is killed by Adler who now takes on the Fuhrer mantle, travels back to the moon to captain the most formidable space ship around, which was waiting to be started by another fantastic energy source- computer tablets. Iron Sky is a funny, entertaining, and well made comedy/spoof of all things Nazi and US politics. The US president resembles a former vicepresidential candidate, but could be any US politician really, uncultured, gung-ho, might makes right, America is the indispensable nation, etc. Anyone who likes Nazi mythology will find here plenty to like. It makes light of everything and it handles touchy topics well. Invariably it has to be somewhat moralizing but it's tolerable. Performances all around are very good. Julia Dietze is just adorable. Götz Otto fantastic as always. Udo Kier unfortunately doesn't get to do much. Peta Sergeant and Stephanie Paul are a revelation. Special effects are very good, except during some of the battle scenes. The story could have been polished a bit more. There's just a lot going on some that is superfluous other stuff could have deserved more depth. All in all, Iron Sky is just the type of light comedy that hits the right spot, it's interesting, well made and an accomplishment of independent cinema. The teasers in the special features section include some additional footage that serve as background, and should have been included in the movie.

Jarmo Puskala came up with the idea for the film whilst in the sauna. The filmmakers also provided the opportunity for collaboration from fans. People could ask for a screening in their home town, help collaborate in the film's creation, and invest in the movie. 10% of the film's budget was generated by fans. However, the idea of Nazis secretly on the Moon goes at least as far back as Robert Heinlein's novel "Rocket Ship Galileo" published in 1947. The Finnish director Timo Vuorensola was under a lot of time pressure and completed the theatrical version only 48 hours ahead of the deadline for the Berlinale festival. Unfortunately, that meant that numerous scenes were not yet finished and couldn't be integrated into the movie. The now released Director's Cut, which is also marketed as Dictator's Cut, is not only much longer than the theatrical version but also the better film. It makes the film seem more complete, adds more depth to story and characters, has more battle scenes and some improved effect shots. That should satisfy fans. The director himself described it this way: "With the Director's Cut, I was able to bring in many of the scenes I really enjoyed and now are prepared in full quality.
