Indeed Singaporeans are Slightly Different - Latest E-Commerce Study on Singapore

Whitney Mato

recent study by iPrice on the latest state of e-commerce around Southeast Asia revealed a very interesting fact about Singaporeans behaviors while shopping online. E-Commerce is not a foreign industry anymore for the people of this country. In fact, it promises such a great growth that the government are following closely with the industry as it changes and grows. On Budget 2018 for Singapore, the government revealed they will start to impose GST on some digital services starting 2020.

The study shows a consistent trend for other Southeast Asia countries tendencies to place their orders online around working hours, which is 9AM until 5PM. These countries includes Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and others.

We can notice from the graph that Singapore placed the last in term of buying during working hours. However, it increases rapidly starting at 7PM, after what we would consider, dinner or after working hours time.

The numbers grow very fast that Singapore immediately places first on the ranking. The numbers peaked at 10PM and Singapore continues to dominate the numbers up until 2AM, a time which probably is more suitable to be on bed. Except for 9PM as Thailand managed to be in lead, we may conclude Singapore is the only country that shops more after working hours, compares to other Southeast Asia countries.

In addition, Singaporeans are well known for their workaholics culture. The data obtained from the study might be another strong point to add on the fact that probably most of Singaporeans are highly addicted to their work.

Nevertheless, balance is still the most important thing in a human being. To be able to balance all of your work is not an easy task but something that's worth to learn and apply in everyone's life. After all, we don't want to lie on the bed and regretting it one day.

Singapore adaptability on the e-commerce trend is a very positive event that will improve the country's economy. Government predicts a huge potential of S$50 billion on the taxes that can be imposed on this industry especially in term of cross border transactions.

Giant company Alibaba domination on Lazada and successful Singapore based startup, Grab, are only the start for Singapore e-commerce scene and we should look forward to a much bigger opportunity and growth for the economy.
