The 20 Best Video Games of 2021 So Far
by Jason Dietz, Metacritic Features Editor
Which games impressed professional reviewers the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed videogames released between January 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021 by Metascore. Games must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible for inclusion.
If a game was released on multiple platforms, we included only the version receiving the largest total number of reviews (usually, but not always, the PS5 or PS4 version).
Multi-game compilations and newly released ports of games released in prior years on other platforms are excluded, unless they are substantially different from the prior release(s) (for example, an HD remaster of a previous-gen game that also adds some new content).
A PC-only deck-builder/RPG/roguelike hybrid from tabletop game company Awaken Realms, Tainted Grail is set in a fantasy world that riffs on Arthurian legend. But King Arthur is dead, the Knights of the Round Table are in disarray, Avalon is cursed, and a mission to save the world has already failed. Now, it is up to you and your motley band of heroes to reach Kamelot and find the Grail. The Kickstarter-funded game features turn-based card battles and exploration.
“Any game so good that you can't resist doing just one more battle in is a game well worth paying attention to, and Tainted Grail definitely manages that.” —TheSixthAxis
A VR-only (for now) tabletop dungeon-crawler, Demeo offers online co-op gameplay for up to four explorers—taking on the roles of a hunter, sorcerer, assassin, and guardian—who work their way through challenging, randomized dungeons. A second adventure was recently added to the base game (originally released in May), with more to follow in the coming months.
“Brilliant simulation of a traditional dungeon crawler board game with a decent variety of enemies. I can’t wait for the release of the next dungeon.” —The Games Machine
A PC adventure game from indie shop Krillbite Studio (Mosaic, Among the Sleep), Sunlight is set in a hand-painted forest. You'll explore that forest on a solo hike, guided by the whispers of the trees (and backed by a Tchaikovsky score performed by an award-winning choir). Gameplay is short—just 30 minutes—but offers a meditative, tranquil escape.
“Sunlight is certainly not for everyone, with a niche place as an art game more akin to Flower or Mountain than even other walking simulators. Nonetheless it's something that certainly will find a home and has a definite impact. Given what we’ve seen in the world in 2020 and the start of 2021, this little moment of peace is much needed.” —Screen Rant
A single-player, turn-based tactical/roguelite/deck-building game that marks the debut for UK indie studio Whatboy Games, the currently PC-only Trials of Fire is set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy realm. Explore procedurally generated maps and engage in turn-based strategic card battles on a top-down hexagonal grid.
“Push past the convoluted mechanics and daunting start of Trials of Fire to be greeted by a deep and engaging deck-building rogue-like that’s meticulously designed, generous with content, and rewarding to play.” —Critical Hit
A PC-only tactical RPG adventure featuring a mix of pixel art and anime-style graphics, the Kickstarter-funded Dark Deity is heavily inspired by the Fire Emblem series. Choose from 30 playable characters in the fantasy land of Terrazael and fight your way through 28 chapters of story, where the turn-based combat unfolds on a grid.
“It particularly reminded me of playing some of the more recent Fire Emblem titles like Awakening and Fates, but I arguably found myself becoming more invested in the plot and caring even more for its characters. The gameplay, while somewhat reminiscent of those Fire Emblem titles, also provides some key differences that help greatly emphasize the strategy component of the game’s campaign. To SRPG fans looking for another Fire Emblem-esque experience, I’d wholeheartedly recommend giving Dark Deity a chance. It is a truly enjoyable addition to the genre, and one I’m glad I got the chance to further peruse.” —RPG Fan
Set in "America's 34th most haunted city," A Fumble in the Dark is a comedic, pixel art-styled, indie point-and-click adventure for consoles and PC, and a sequel to 2017's The Darkside Detective. The new game features six new standalone mysteries at locations ranging from a carnival to a retirement home, and it received even better reviews than the original. (Newcomers, fear not: Fumble includes a quick recap of events for those who didn't play the previous game.)
“A ridiculous and funny point and click adventure that anyone can enjoy. The style of gameplay is simple, allowing you to enjoy the art, music and especially the writing even more. It will feed you that good mix of absurd and self-aware comedy that you didn’t even know you were hungry for.” —Checkpoint Gaming
Released in February for PS4, Switch, and PC, Strikers is both a sequel to 2017's Persona 5 and a crossover with the Dynasty Warriors franchise. The result is that in addition to being an RPG (centering again on a group of Japanese high school vigilantes known as the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, who embark here on a summer road trip to six different locations across Japan), Strikers is also an action game, with real-time, hack-and-slash combat.
“Persona 5 Strikers is proof that change isn't always a bad thing. While it may not hold onto everything that made its forebear a phenomenon, the new elements it brings to the table more than make up for it, and show that the series' future lies in more than just straight-forward turn-based JRPGs.” — Twinfinite
Featuring a blood-drinking, castle-dwelling, giantess villain named Lady Dimitrescu, the newest game in the main Resident Evil series is a direct sequel to 2017's Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, returning that game's protagonist Ethan Winters and pairing him (under duress) with franchise regular Chris Redfield and shipping the both of them off to Transylvania. The first-person gameplay is similar to that of RE7, and reviews are generally similar as well: mostly positive, with some complaints about the ending and the way the survival horror and action components fit together.
“Resident Evil Village is a gripping entry for this long-running horror franchise. Capcom has excelled at translating the strengths of this series through perspective and tonal shifts. It succeeds as both a horror game and an action game.” —Digital Chumps

Another notable PS5 exclusive, this April release is the first big-budget game from Finnish developer Housemarque (which was purchased by Sony a few weeks ago, partially due to the success of Returnal). A third-person sci-fi/horror shooter, Returnal casts you as a space pilot who finds herself stranded on a hostile alien planet and caught in a time loop. That means you will be resurrected after every death, but the procedurally generated world will offer fresh challenges each time through.
“Playing Returnal, it feels like next-gen has truly begun. The way it seamlessly moves from third-person to first-person; how you move from biome to biome without loading screens taking you out of the action; the DualSense implementation; the fluidity of the gameplay; the phenomenal visuals and audio; all of these elements, and more, come together to create an experience that is truly like no other. ... If you own a PS5 you need to play Returnal. It's as simple as that.” —GameSpew

Influenced by Dark Souls and Hollow Knight, PC and Switch title Ender Lilies is a "metroidvania"-style 2D dark fantasy action/RPG game set in a permanently rain-soaked and ruined land inhabited by the undead—and a living but amnesiac child priestess, Lily, who serves as your playable character. When she conquers an undead boss, she learns new abilities and can "purify" him, causing her one-time foe to fight alongside her going forward.
“Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights is that rare example of a game that melds classic game design with modern narrative sensibilities. It's at once a slice of platforming, exploration and combat that'll feel familiar to all, while also tacking mature themes with every beat. It's a treat to play, a sight to behold, and well worth your time.” —Gfinity
Also released for PC and mobile, the Switch mystery adventure Overboard! comes from the creative team behind 80 Days and Heaven's Vault. The game is set on a cruise ship in 1935 where a murder has been committed. But it's not a whodunnit: You are the murderer. The goal is to frame somebody else for the killing, and you'll have just eight hours (about 45 minutes of gameplay) until the ship reaches its destination to convince the authorities. Each replay reveals new secrets and offers a different path to success.
“Overboard! allows us to imagine what would have happened had Agatha Christie seen Groundhog Day and written a whole new type of mystery novel as a result. Its mobile format also works in its favour – as a Switch or smartphone game, it feels like carrying a little detective paperback around with you, except here you are the lead character, author and reader. As an experiment in fast, story-based game development it is – unlike most of my own mariticidal plots and alibis – a quite scintillating success.” —The Guardian
A narrative adventure for Switch and PC from Japanese indie developer GameTomo, Sumire is set in a picturesque, enchanted village, where a girl named Sumire has a single day to accomplish a series of tasks before night falls. Critics praised the game's bittersweet story and strong visuals, though they cautioned that gameplay takes a backseat to story.
“Sumire is a short but brilliant emotional adventure about getting the most out of limited time by experiencing love, friendship, growth, loss, and more.” —The Mako Reactor
Released for PlayStation and PC in June, this Kickstarter-funded indie adventure/RPG hybrid from Greg Lobanov is set in a coloring-book world where the famous artist, Chicory, has mysteriously vanished. You'll have to find her and restore color to the world by exploring the world and solving a series of puzzles using a unique painting mechanic. The result is creative, charming, and chill.
“It's balanced well enough to offer an engrossing adventure with standout puzzle mechanics and satisfying solutions. ... It's an evocative tale that doesn't rest on its narrative alone, making it one of the best games you can play this year.” —GameSpot
The seventh main entry in the 23-year-old fighting game franchise arrived in June for PlayStation and PC after a COVID-related delay of over a year. Strive is designed to be less daunting to newcomers than previous installments. Select from 15 very different playable characters and jump right into the most visually impressive 1v1 fighting the series has yet to offer.
"This is the best Guilty Gear to enter the series, and one of the best games in the franchise. Accessible, incredible deep and espectacular, Strive is a must-have for 2D fighting fans.” —Vandal
Released early in 2021 for virtually every platform (though the PC version is an Epic exclusive for now), the latest in the third-person stealth series concludes the "World of Assassination" reboot trilogy that began with 2016's Hitman. This time, your playable assassin Agent 47 heads to a variety of new locations including Berlin, Dubai, and Chongqing, though all locations from the previous two games can also be played within the new game. Critics love the game's flexibility, replayability, and satisfying storytelling.
“Taken individually, Hitman 3 feels like great value, with plenty of variety and lots to do. When taken as a whole, the World of Assassination trilogy is hands-down one of the best and most complete-feeling trilogies in video game history. It’s a fitting finale for 47 – at least for now – and it has naturally left me thrilled to see what IO does with James Bond or whatever else comes next. It might only be January – but I can pretty much guarantee this will end the year as one of my 2021 favourites.” —VG247
Released for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in March, the latest from A Way Out developer Hazelight Studios is another two-player-only action-adventure. While that previous game tasked you and your partner with breaking out of prison, the more emotional It Takes Two casts its two players as a bickering married couple who have been trapped inside the bodies of two of their daughter's handmade dolls. Cooperation is the key to passing a series of tests, reversing the spell, and reuniting with the young girl. Critics praised the game's inventive approach.
“It Takes Two is a Pixar-worthy adventure that consistently innovates, offering players an excellent co-op experience unlike any other.” —GamesRadar+
The first of two 2021 Monster Hunter titles, the timed Switch-exclusive Rise brings the fantasy action-RPG series into the new "ninja-inspired" locale of Kamura Village. Gameplay is similar to that of 2018's Monster Hunter World (albeit with new additions including a new "Rampage" survival mode), and you can hunt on your own or with up to three companions. A PC port should arrive in 2022.
“Monster Hunter Rise is everything I had hoped it would be, and more. It’s welcoming to beginners while still retaining that deep core experience that longtime players know and love. It’s challenging, but never in ways that feel unfair or cruel. And the attention to the details that are meant to keep one smiling is something you don’t see too often. Every inch of Rise plays like it’s the culmination of the series’ best ideas.” —COGconnected
The most notable exclusive released for Sony's new PlayStation 5 to date, the latest entry in the nearly 20-year-old cartoon-styled platformer franchise from Insomniac Games follows five years after a PS4 franchise reboot. Designed to be approachable for newcomers and longtime fans alike, Rift introduces a new playable character, the resistance fighter Rivet (who aids the titular duo), and a storyline (set across both new and returning locations) centering on an alternate dimension in which the villainous Dr. Nefarious is now an emperor.
“In a time when sneering, ironic detachment remains in fashion, Insomniac Games has created the rare modern masterpiece with no convoluted agenda, no subtext — just so many reasons to smile and laugh.” —The Washington Post
Yes, it's a port of a previously released game, but it's also much more than that. In addition to a new Switch version of the 2013 Wii U platformer Super Mario 3D World—enhanced here with speedier gameplay, online multiplayer, and a new "Snapshot Mode" to record your moves—the package includes an all-new adventure, Bowser's Fury, set in a cat-themed open world where Bowser uses apocalyptic firestorms to attempt to thwart Mario.
“Bringing one of the best games of the whole Mario franchise to Switch, with a few little tweaks here and there, would have been enough to make a Super Mario 3D World repackage an essential part of anyone’s Switch library. But Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury goes a whole lot further, with the addition of what could just as well have been a whole new standalone game, and a brilliant one at that.” —Shindig

This year's highest-scoring new title as of midyear is a procedurally generated tactical RPG set in a hand-painted, papercraft-style 2D world called the Yondering Lands. An indie title (from Worldwalker Games) that's exclusive to PC, Wildermyth has been earning praise for its emphasis on storytelling and character development since it emerged from early access in June.
“I am utterly in love with Wildermyth. With this full release bringing it to five main campaigns and fleshing out endless generic ones, it will satisfy your RPG craving like nothing else.” —PC Gamer
