Remake of the 1999 TV series of Hunter x Hunter based on the manga by Togashi Yoshihiro. A Hunter is one who travels the world doing all sorts of dangerous tasks. From capturing criminals to searching deep within uncharted lands for any lost treasures. Gon is a young boy whose father disappeared long ago, being a Hunter. He believes if he could also follow his father's path, he could one day reunite with him. After becoming 12, Gon leaves his home and takes on the task of entering the Hunter exam, notorious for its low success rate and high probability of death to become an official Hunter. He befriends the revenge-driven Kurapica, the doctor-to-be Leorio and the rebellious ex-assassin Killua in the exam, with their friendship prevailing throughout the many trials and threats they come upon taking on the dangerous career of a Hunter.
Gon Freecss is a young boy living on Whale Island. He learns from "Hunter" Kite, that his father, who he was told was dead, is still alive somewhere as a top "Hunter," risking his life to seek unknown items, such as hidden treasures, curiosa, exotic living creatures, etc. Gon decides to become a professional Hunter and leaves the island. To become a Hunter, he must pass the Hunter Examination, where he meets and befriends three other applicants: Kurapika, Leorio and Killua. Can Gon pass this formidable hurdle, the Hunter Examination, to become "the Best Hunter in the World" and eventually meet his father?
FYI, I'm a lawyer in my 40s, not some kid, and basically ran out of anything on TV that I could stand, as it was all so formulaic and tired and low-brain. Well, I noticed some anime seemed focused on adults (not the sex stuff, but violence and intelligent plots and stuff), so I tried own -- Sword Art Online. It really opened my eyes to these hidden treasures -- the stories blend fantasy elements with action and interesting characters. Really the main thing I noticed was being surprised by plot twists. Whereas an American TV series or movie you can pretty much guess where it's going to go, this took turns and twists that really impressed me with the intelligence of the show. I mean, Lost took a lot of twists, but they were sort of random/contrived, and my final analysis was the writers were just making it up as they went along to avoid answering any hard questions, very stupid and contrived. Sword Art avoided that.

Anyway, after finishing that anime, I tried several more, and while some were good and still better than traditional American shows, none had the intelligent plotting of Sword Art Online -- till I found Hunter X Hunter, which just totally kicked it up a notch in both fantasy elements, interesting characters, intelligent plot twists you won't see coming, and the like. With some bad guys being sort of serial murderer/pedophiles, it's not for kids, but well done...even those pervy bad guys sometimes redeem themselves, at least for a short time.

How the main characters got more powerful as the series progressed, to be able to best stronger and stronger foes (usually) was well thought out, too, and not overly simplistic. The only downside was that by the fifth (?) story arc involving mutant ant people, I felt it had gotten a bit formulaic and I was not buying into how the world was responding to this threat, and felt the series might have jumped the shark, so to speak. However, I stuck it out and halfway through the arc I really started to enjoy it and the plot kept taking interesting twists. I'm not ashamed to say that I cried at least once because there were such bittersweet moments created.

I don't think I ever enjoyed a movie or TV series more than Hunter X Hunter, and with over 150 episodes, that's a LOT of great TV.
it a great anime by all means. if like adventure/great unique characters/great pacing how doesn't will love the this series. 1st i will mention the problems within the series: 1- the really slow childish start. but better than 1999 adaption :) 2- the fact that the arcs are not connected but i got over it due to nature of the main plot 3- the fact that their is two contracting plots running together but i got over it to due to the way the story connect them in the end. 4- the slow build up which is sometimes slow that it kills but their is funny and other enjoyable moments to keep watching and entertained and the result of the build up is mind blowing so keep watching. 5-the explaining voice i would have like it even more it was shown than told by an explaining voice. 6-sometimes a character is thrown out of nowhere but i got over it because of the great character development Now what i like : i like a lot of things in this series that in every show i watch i compare it hunter x hunter 1-the 2nd best character development ever in an anime or a manga series -the 1st goes to berserk manga-. 2- one of the best story pacing in anime 3- likable, unique, felt and awesome characters that you will love for sure. 4-the variety of things the show presents comedy, drama, adventure, friendship, a bit of romance, awesome fights, deep meanings of events and much more. 5- best friendship in anime series ever. 6-great wonderful animation nothing is less expected from madhouse studios. 7-soundtracks are good. you should watch !!!!!!

Both series are anime based on the Japanese manga "Hunter x Hunter".

The original series that aired in 1999 was produced by Nippon Animation, and while it did follow the manga for the most part, it also deviated in many ways. Parts of the original story were altered, as well as "filler" episodes, which are unique to the anime and not found anywhere in the manga. Unfortunately, the writing of the manga went on hiatus during the production of this series, and as a result, the 1999 series could not complete the Hunter x Hunter story.

The 2011 series is produced by Madhouse Inc., and promises to follow the manga very closely. The manga has sinced resumed from hiatus, which should allow the 2011 series to animate episodes far beyond the 1999 series as well as the other Hunter x Hunter OVAs (Original Video Animations). a5c7b9f00b
