Maybe a dozen films exist which deal with family kidnapping and the police. Some are good, some are bad and then there is HOSTAGE. The very best of the not so good. The premise of this overtly confusing offering is Bruce Willis who plays Jeff Talley, an experienced hostage negotiator who is hiding from himself. Years ago, he failed to protect a young mother and her son from a psychotic father in the big city. Reclusive and retired now, he's become the sheriff in a rural setting where a group of thrill-seeking, teens have taken a family hostage. What they don't know is that the man of the house is Walter Smith (Kevin Pollak) who's a special confidential bookkeeper for the Mob and that Talley's family will pay should Willis prove uncooperative. Complicating the scene is the F.B.I. who have a suspicious but special interest in the hostage and will do what they must to safeguard his life and knowledge. In Bruce Willis fashion, the film is subtle in it's inception, but wildly explosive in it's impact. Fun for Willis fans. **
A failed police negotiator turned small town cop, must save the lives of a family held hostage, which draws him into a much more dangerous situation.

The film's plot is roughly the same as the novel; the main difference is that a complicated subplot involving the Mafia was removed and the ages of the first group of hostage-takers was lowered slightly.

Although reviews on the film seem to be mixed or even negative, Ebert wrote of the plot twists, "This is ingenious, and adds an intriguing complexity to what could have been a one-level story." And he is right. The film is complex, but never in a way that seems contrived. Impossible, maybe, but without the reality of film quite sensible.

Bruce Willis is a great action star, and while action films may have faded since the 1980s, Willis never faded with them. He continues to bring a certain level of excitement to his pictures and it is no surprise the "Die Hard" franchise has been successful long after other franchises have fallen off.
What sends this initially tense thriller over the precipice is a plot scheme that never knows when enough is enough.
