We made a list of the best teen movie v-card scenes – good, bad and ugly. Because virginity... who needs it?
By Kate Wertheimer and Phil de Semlyen Posted: Thursday June 24 2021
Losing one’s virginity – be it romantically, awkwardly or otherwise – is a teenage rite of passage (perhaps the teenage rite of passage). While it pops up in a miscellany of adult-oriented movies, like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Call Me By Your Name, it’s an absolute fixture in teen flicks. The motivation behind most teens' actions can be boiled down to one thing: sex, without which we wouldn’t have the following great scenes.
This sweaty, sun-dappled sex scene is pretty magical, we have to admit. Sebastian, ever the gentleman, asks if Annette is okay (um, she seems great) while Counting Crows' "Colorblind" plays in the background... but it was 1999, okay? Don't lie and say the whole thing didn't stir your loins.
Poor McLovin. He only got in one thrust before being rudely interrupted by his cockblocking cop friends, scaring away his lady friend and driving him to his inhaler. But oh, what a thrust.
Lux Lisbon is living the Platonic Ideal of the American teen experience: she’s a beautiful suburban blonde who is crowned homecoming queen before losing her virginity to her king under the lights of her high school’s football field. Unfortunately for Lux, she’s in a Sofia Coppola movie, which means that she’s going to wake up the next morning near the 50-yard line, that teen dream quickly replaced by the cold light of day.
When Di accidentally drives on the freeway, the fear of death drives her and Murray into one another's arms (beds). Like Cher says, "Boy, getting off the freeway makes you realize how important love is."
"I think if we fuck, you would love it." So says Telly, the self-proclaimed "virgin surgeon," as he prepares to relieve another barely-teenage victim of her innocence. This is cherry-popping as an act of unthinking existential desperation, a way for the unloved Telly to leave his mark on the world. How the girl in question feels about it is, rather cruelly, left unexplored.
Unless you also lost your virginity in a seedy baseball dugout while Jackson Browne crooned "Somebody's Baby" on the soundtrack of your mind, you can't even begin to understand the psychic trauma endured by Jennifer Jason Leigh's Stacy. Also, that bench has got to hurt. But it's the poolhouse sex (pictured above) that everyone remembers... we wonder why?
Ben and McKinley's romance is by far our favorite subplot in Wet Hot American Summer. And while the hippie wedding scene is magical, it just doesn't beat sweaty man sex in a sports shed, complete with tube socks and loose balls (we mean soccer balls, perv).
Loathing turns to lust when former childhood friends Denise and Kenny are locked in a bathroom together all night. And Kenny's creepy love backpack comes in handy after all.
A sun-warmed coming-of-age film concerned with popping cherries (and the odd peach), Call Me By Your Name’s abashed-but-sincere virginity scene shows that it’s possible to express and repress your desires at the same time. When 17-year-old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) hooks up for a roll on the lawn with Marzia (Esther Garrel), its pleasures can’t mask the fact that his stronger urges are for studly American Oliver (Armie Hammer). Bonus points for doing the deed ’80s-style in double denim.
This is arguably the most heartbreaking loss-of-virginity scene in cinema, as a gang of bored Texas teens round up slow-witted Billy and drag him down to the corpulent local hooker to make a man of him. He comes too soon, she punches him in the face, and another hapless kid loses what little innocence he had left.
Three bored band-aids (note: no Penny Lane) strip and deflower William for fun. Maybe not the most romantic scenario, but we can think of worse entrées into manhood.

Warner Bros. via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Leif Garrett. This movie is a who's who of the hottest men in Hollywood that stands up to today. Based on S.E. Hinton's novel about rival gangs it's mostly memorable for the cast. It's hard to imagine a young Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe would still be heartthrobs to this day. 1980's teen icons Howell, Macchio, and Swayze prove why they were popular. 1970's pop icon Leif Garrett even makes an appearance in a rival gang.
Heartthrobs: Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Rick Rossovich, Tim Robbins, John Stockwell. This movie made Cruise a major A-lister. Not only could he headline a movie but he could bring a huge audience. It helps that he's joined by Kilmer. Who can forget the infamous volleyball scene with muscleman Rossovich. It even includes an early appearance by Tim Robbins. The inner workings of military flight training never seemed any hotter.
20th Century Fox via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen, Dermot Mulroney. It’s hard to imagine there was a time when the Estevez brothers, or the Sheen brothers depending on who you ask, were hot. But this movie about young outlaws in the Wild West is proof. They are joined by “La Bamba” star Phillips and “24” star Sutherland were breaking hearts and box office numbers.
Paramount Pictures via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: Brendan Fraser, Matt Damon, Chris O’Donnell, Randall Batinkoff, Cole Hauser, Ben Affleck, Anthony Rapp. Before winning their Oscar, both Damon and Affleck stared in this period piece about prep school boys. Fraser plays a Jewish student who must hide his religion from his WASP-y classmates. There’s a memorable fight scene…in the shower between Damon and Fraser. Plus, there’s even an appearance by Mark (Rapp) from “Rent.”
Warner Bros. Pictures via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater. The movie version of Anne Rice’s popular novel really brought the hotties. A vampire recounts his sordid history to an attractive young interviewer? Yes please! Slater had to replace River Phoenix but he’s equally as popular. A young Pitt really established himself as a heartthrob and kept Cruise in the limelight. Banderas also burst onto the American scene and had a thriving career.
New Line Cinema via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, Patrick McGaw, James Madio. The life story of a renowned heroin addict and author isn’t exactly the making of a 'Tiger Beat' article. And yet, the film stars DiCaprio, former underwear model and musician Wahlberg, and Madio that Italian kid from 'Hook.' DiCaprio and Wahlberg definitely proved their acting abilities and star potential.
Buena Vista Pictures via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: Scott Wolf, Jeremy Sisto, Ryan Phillippe, David Lascher, Balthazar Getty, Ethan Embry, Jason Marsden. This is one of those films that gratuitously casts a ton of heartthrobs. Ridley Scott directed this film about a school sailing trip that is interrupted by…you guessed it…a white squall. It features heartthrobs of film like Phillippe and Sisto, and television stars like Embry, Marsden, and Lascher.
Artisan Entertainment via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: Jeremy Sisto, Johnny Galecki, Henry Thomas, Sean Patrick Flannery, Jay Mohr. This film is a bit more of a sleeper hot guy wise. A bunch ballsy guys hatch a plot to kidnap a mob boss. Most of the guys would get major buzz later in their career. Sisto became a huge star on 'Six Feet Under,' Galecki on 'Big Bang Theory' and Mohr would star in 'Go' and 'Action.' Flannery was almost a heartthrob after 'Powder,' 'Girl,' and is best known for 'The Boondock Saints.'
TriStar Pictures via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Sabato Jr., Bokeem Woodbine, Lou Diamond Phillips. This forgettable action comedy finds Wahlberg playing an assassin and a total pushover who can’t please either of his demanding girlfriends. Woodbine, Phillips, and Calvin Klein model Sabatao Jr. play his co-workers. There’s also a very, very memorable locker room scene.
Heartthrobs: Ewan McGregor, Christian Bale, Jonathan Rhys Meyers. This is a bit of a departure from what you’d expect from a heartthrob film. This fictional look at the glam rock era features a lot of gender bending and fluid sexuality. McGregor and Meyers play punk rock stars who enter into a secret relationship. Bale plays a journalist obsessed with enigmatic Meyers. These three actors went on to become major sex symbols. This film also features a stop on McGregor’s Full Frontal tour of cinema.
20th Century Fox Film via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Jared Leto. This edgy pop culture commentary, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk. It features guys who start fighting shirtless in a basement to feel alive. Do with that what you will? It features Oscar winners Pitt and Leto and Norton…who played the Hulk. There’s also an honorable mention for MeatLoaf who at one time was a sex symbol.
Warner Bros. Pictures via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Don Cheadle, Andy Garcia. This heist movie features almost every hot actor of the moment. Pitt, Clooney, and Damon are have a major draw and a high heartbreaker potential. Affleck, Caan, and Cheadle all have followings of their own. Plus, Garcia was one of the hottest actors of the 1990s. They made their own Rat Pack because the film launched two sequels.
Heartthrobs: Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Jamie Foxx, Lucas Black, Brian Geraghty, Laz Alonso. This film featured Gyllenhaal’s evolution from Hollywood pretty boy to an edgier actor. He took a grittier, and sexually forthcoming approach to playing a young military recruit. His fellow soldiers include a couple of major hot guys including Foxx as the superior officer.
20th Century Fox Film via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: Chris Evans, Joel McHale, Chris Pratt, David Annable, Andy Sandberg, Zachary Quinto, Martin Freeman, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Mike Vogel. This romantic comedy finds Anna Faris questioning her number of sexual partners. However, her exes feature some of the sexiest men in comedy including real-life husband Pratt, McHale, and Sandberg. It also helps that Evans is majorly cut up. Annable of 'Brothers and Sisters' and 'Sherlock' star Freeman up the hot quotient.
Heartthrobs: Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Alex Pettyfer, Adam Rodriguez. This film made film history when it had some of Hollywood’s hottest actor drop trou in elaborately freaky dance numbers. However, sadly, the tone of the film was a bit of a downer. Tatum plans on producing a more fun, hopefully even stripp-ier sequel.
Focus Features via Everett Collection
Heartthrobs: Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller. This comedy brings these very sexy actors and a romantic comedy with a bit of a male-bent. These guys are becoming major players in Hollywood with their growing list of projects.
