HIT AND RUN is a comedy about a young couple ('Kristen Bell' and 'Dax Shepard') that risks it all when they leave their small town life and embark on a road trip that may lead them towards the opportunity of a lifetime. Their fast-paced road trip grows awkwardly complicated and hilarious when they are chased by a friend from the past ('Bradley Cooper'), a federal marshal ('Tom Arnold') and a band of misfits.
No this isn&#39;t as mediocre as you&#39;re thinking. It isn&#39;t. No it&#39;s not just another cheesy Hollywood comedy with dense jokes that&#39;s all about car-oriented action scenes and a pretty girl. I for example know nothing about cars and don&#39;t appreciate by the number American comedies and I really enjoyed this. If anything the title does the film no favors.<br/><br/>Dax Shepard, the male lead, actually does surprisingly well as a writer and director. Better than you&#39;d think. In one word, this comedy has great &#39;balance&#39;. The humor is centered a lot around contemporary social issues like political correctness and its abuse, and Shepard gives in a really good shift of managing to expose the silliness of the whole debate while not really piking any side outright and juggles well with both positions in a way that&#39;s properly comedic and fun. The character played by Bradley Cooper is characteristically hilarious in that same sense, he&#39;s this tree-hugging eco-friendly extremist psycho who acts as a spoof and as proper plot material at the same time.<br/><br/>Some scenes are genuinely funny, a couple proper hilarious, and all in all it&#39;s very well paced, very well constructed, dialog as explained is witty and balanced (not too cute, not too thick), the characters are funny and believable despite being like comic book characters, and there&#39;s good attention to detail, everything is spelled out or made totally obvious.<br/><br/>Very pleasantly surprised: 7.5/10.
I would also have loved to see this movie as a crime drama because of its plot and especially Bradley Cooper&#39;s Alex Dmitri. I thought his whole dog-loving criminal attitude was a breath of fresh air from the usual movie criminal personality.<br/><br/>That being said, my favorite character was Debbie, the MILF (at least she looks like one) that gets Annie the interview. She was great and hilarious. I also think Kristen Bell is an absolute star. Dax Shephard has a sort of commanding presence on screen and and it&#39;s why I&#39;d like to see him in something along the drama/thriller/psychological horror genre.<br/><br/>Some other notes: The scenery on the drive from Milton to LA was lovely and I thought it was a great idea by the movie makers (you and your partner, I imagine) to film that one scene in the orange grove. Where were those road trip scenes? Central California Coast? Great scenery there.<br/><br/>My only criticism really is that I thought some of the violence was a little too violent for a comedy but that&#39;s just me. All in all, I thought it was a very funny &amp; entertaining movie. I think the Shephard/Bell chemistry definitely comes across on screen and it&#39;d be nice to see them in another movie together.
Pretty much everything shot by Shepard and co-director David Palmer looks as if it was done in one take. Hit & Run is closest in tone to the Tarantino-penned "True Romance," but it lacks that movie's menace.
