What makes high stakes by Dick Francis good?
What I liked better in High Stakes than in other Francis books is the way he sets up Steven as a team player, rather than the usual Lone Ranger hero. He quickly gathers around him a few loyal friends and sets up a really smart heist to outwit the bad guys.

Who is the protagonist in Dick Francis High Stakes?
I would argue that this is one of the best books in the Dick Francis catalog. The protagonist, Steven Scott, is somewhat unusual for a Dick Francis novel in that he is a relatively wealthy man who made a fortune designing a very popular line of children's toys.

Steven Scott may have been a successful, wealthy inventor with no experience in horseracing, but with the inspired guidance of his trainer, Jody Leeds, and the prowess of a beautiful black hurdler named Energise, he has brought home several wins.

What makes Dick Francis's blood sport so good?
The dialogue is clear and touched with humor no matter the intensity of evil that the hero faces. The hero's thoughts reveal a vulnerability that is touching, while his actions are always based on doing the right thing to achieve justice. Causing the reader to deeply care about the characters in a novel is a difficult thing to do.

As is true of all Francis’ books, the title includes several meanings . . .

1 - The ‘high stakes’ bettors risk (bankruptcy, ruin) on horse races.
2 - The ‘high stakes’ embezzlers gamble (prison, disgrace) by stealing.
3 - The ‘high stakes’ our hero risks (slander, injury) for justice.

The first sentence sets the theme . . .

“I looked at my friend and saw a man who had robbed me. Deeply disturbing. The ultimate in rejection.’’

Now, our narrator is a rich inventor, money not important. So, the focus of the story is emotional betrayal, not financial loss. Love for horses, not concern for winning.

Nevertheless, he discovers that his betrayers ruining many small betting shops by deceit. Hateful.

“Ganser Mays. I detested him in quite a different way from Jody. From Bert Huggerneck’s description of the killing off of one small bookmaking business, it was probable Ganser Mays had as much professional honor as an octopus. His tentacles stretched out and clutched, and sucked the victim dry. I had a vision of a whole crowd of desperate little men sitting on their office floors because the bailiffs had taken the furniture, sobbing with relief down their telephones while Ganser Mays offered to buy the albatross of their lease for peanuts: and another vision of the same crowd of little men getting drunk in dingy pubs, trying to obliterate the pain of seeing the bright new shop fronts glowing over the ashes of their closed books.’’

Wicked and evil.

He asks . . .

“Are all criminals so full of hate?”
“I dare say. I don’t know all that many. Do you?”
“No.”
“I should think,” Charlie said, “that the hate comes first. Some people are just natural haters. Some bully the weak, some become anarchists, some rape women, some steal with maximum mess… and all of them enjoy the idea of the victim’s pain.”
“Then you can’t cure a hater,” I said. “With hard-liners, not a chance.”

And this highlights the underlying idea in this work. Hatred of successful, fury when caught, wicked spite when punished, revenge against victims who discover the evil.

Steven confronts his betrayer in front of crowd of reporters . . .

“Jody noticed. Maliciousness flooded through him and twisted his features with spite. “You big rich bastards don’t give a damn who you hurt.”

Now notice, the thief overcome with ‘malicious spite’. These motives play a key role in the drama. What is spite? What drives malice? How much will such ones risk to satisfy these evil desires? Why play for such ‘high stakes’?

Now this is classic Francis. Evil exists in the human heart by choice. Not caused by society, not created from upbringing, just a personal, individual decision.

Our hero outwits the thieves, wins the girl, finds loyal friends and protects others from loss.

Wonderful!

High Stakes was written in 1975. It was Dick Francis’ 13th novel. This book has an audio file and is whisper synced. The hero, Steven Scott, is a business owner and a newish horse owner, who has been cheated by his trainer. It is important to understand when it was written: no cellphones, no PCs; no internet. Dick Francis creates intriguing characters from a variety of backgrounds. He also writes books that “wear well”. By that I mean that I read this book about once a year and always find it interesting and the characters intriguing. This is one of the few of his books that has an Epilogue, but the characters are so engaging that it works.

Have read many of his books, when he wrote about jockey mysteries, then I lost tract of him. His mysteries still have the race tract background and dealing with horses. It is easy reading and moves right along. The characters are every day people.

I read this book many years ago when it was first published. Now I am slowing getting rid of my hardback and paperback books in favor of Kindle in order to downsize. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, this book is not available on Kindle. Would like to add it to my Kindle collection. It's about time authors realized no Kindle means fewer sales, and certainly fewer sales of books that have been out for many years. It's about time for Dick Francis' estate to take back the rights to his books and get them out on Kindle so a whole new generation can enjoy his talent, and so those of us who have been fans for years can keep his books for re-reading on Kindle while downsizing our physical libraries.

I just like Dick Francis style of writing. Here you can feel the protagonists frustration as he discover his trainer is cheating him and fires him. The problem is that this Trainer is well liked and there is no proof. What I like about Dick Francis novels is the heroes are usually ordinary people who get pulled into dangerous and violent situations. A page turner.

Really enjoyed this book - another rattling good yarn. I've read it several times and enjoyed it every time. My only complaint (with regard to the Kindle edition) is the typographical errors. I don't know how these books are transformed from paper to digital, but the result is some very odd words at intervals throughout the book. If it hadn't been such a good story, it would have put me off reading it. This fault applies to all the Dick Francis books in Kindle format - I am working my way through them all.

Again Dick Francis comes up with new and interesting characters. How he comes up with the background and depth to his characters never ceases to amaze me. This book is about a race horse owner who is a toy maker by trade. He owns a number of race horses and finds out his trainer has been defrauding him. He seeks retribution but this never works out as clean as he imagines. As always with Dick Francis the characters have depth and character traits that we can relate to. In addition most of his characters have courage and strength that most of us would aspire to!
