Being a great fan of horror and weird fiction I greatly enjoyed reading Sheridan Le Fanu’s ‘In a Glass Darkly’ some years ago, and was captivated by his atmospheric and chilling tales in the Gothic tradition. I therefore resolved to discover more of his macabre stories and was, again, highly impressed by this collection. I would certainly rank Le Fanu with the likes of Poe, Lovecraft, Blackwood and James for their gruesome short stories. First up, ‘The Watcher’, actually appears, in rewritten form in the aforementioned ‘In a Glass Darkly’, but I was very happy to revisit it. What strikes me most is the impending sense of doom that accompanies the unfortunate captain on his walk home, and the fraying on his nerves, and sanity, over the long period of his harassment. Apparently, although I have not yet read it, ‘A Passage in the Secret History of an Irish Countess’ is the foundation for Le Fanu’s later novel ‘Uncle Silas. This is not horror, but a classic and early example of the locked-room mystery – although there is a diabolic uncle and creepy cousin. My favourite in this collection had to be ‘Schalken the Painter’ which is truly a work of the grotesque. Everything about this story is disquieting and increasingly horrifying. I would not want to meet Minheer Vanderhausen of Rotterdam down a dark alley. The final story of note, ‘A Chapter in the History of a Tyrone Family’ has the now familiar rural, aristocratic Irish setting. What I enjoyed most about this story, apart from the repugnant appearance of the Dutchwoman, was the sense of isolation in surreal and increasingly brutal circumstances. In some senses it is a shame that was not more resolution to the ‘mystery’, but sometimes it is better left to one’s own imagination I suppose. Both ‘Sir Robert Ardagh’ and ‘The Dream’ are, alas, relatively light-weight in comparison to the stories mentioned above and mere diversions. Still overall an excellent window into the talents of a Gothic master.
