The Plant Sitter by Gene Zion tells the story of Tommy. Tommy is a young boy that is looking for something fun to do throughout the summer. Because Tommy is not able to take a vacation with his family for the summer, Tommy decides to watch the plants that his neighbors leave at home while they travel. For each day Tommy cares for a neighbors plants he receives two cents as compensation. Tommy loves his summer job and spends ample time watering the plants every day. However, Tommy is concerned that the plants are getting too big, and Tommy begins to wonder how to control the growth of the plants. Therefore, Tommy decides to go conduct additional research on plant health. After being inspired by his research, Tommy purchases some materials to enhance the health of the plants. With his new found knowledge about plants, Tommy trims each of the plants and puts the plant clippings in pots to grow new plants. Finally, when the neighbors come back from their vacation, Tommy gives a gift to each neighbor. The gift is a baby plant that he grows from trimming the original plants he is watching for his neighbors. One thing that really catches my eye in this story is the character Tommy. In my opinion, Tommy is a very well-developed character. Tommy is a very happy, enthusiastic child. Because of Tommy’s dedication to his job as a plant sitter, he teaches young children the importance of responsibility. In addition, Tommy’s interest in learning about the health of plants shows children that learning can be lots of fun, and this is an important message that needs to be conveyed to children at a young age. I also like that the primary colors of the illustrations in this story are green and blue. Green and blue are very earthy colors and are used very well to illustrate a story about plants. Furthermore, I like how there are many pages that have plant borders around them. The plant borders are circling borders of plant vines, and the circular shape of the border centers the reader’s eyes in the middle of the circle. Therefore, the images within the circle become the focus of the page, and I think this is a very strategic design element that the illustrator incorporates.Finally, I think the illustrations do a nice job conveying the story. The details in the pictures really illustrate the jungle description that is described in the text. For example, the plant illustrations show vines, cacti, plants that look like palm trees, and plants that look like roses. In addition, Tommy’s actions such as dreaming, reading, watering the plants, and trimming the plants are easily interpreted through the pictures. I like books that have this strong relationship between the text and the illustrations because it gives young children the chance to use their imagination to tell the story to their parents. With this being said, there are not many challenging words in this story, but there is still a considerable amount of text to read for a young reader. However, this book would be a good read for children with all levels of reading skills, and I highly recommend this book.
