Book description
McDuff Moves In is the story about a dog who escapes a truck that is about to take him to the dog pound. It is a gloomy night, and the dog is hungry and seeking shelter; however, every time he approaches a house, another animal scares him away. Luckily, a couple opens the door for the dog and let him in their home where they feed and wash him. They, Lucy and Fred, decide that they needed to take him to the dog pound. While driving, Lucy notices that Fred is driving in circles, and they both confess they dont want to find the dog pound. As a result, they take the dog back home and name him McDuff, their new family pet.The colors at the beginning of the story are very dark. This demonstrates the the sad mood because of how McDuff was lost and lonely after avoiding getting sent to the dog pound. They consists of the dark blue that makes the night sky and the dark greens. Also, the flowers in one of the pictures also demonstrate the mood because they are bent in the way dead flowers bend. The rain also contributes to this sad mood because rain is usually associated with gloomy days, and McDuffs appearance due to the rain shows his struggle to find a shelter and some food. Once the couple takes him into their home, the colors become more pastel such as the pastel yellow of the wall. This showcases the change in mood to one of hope and maybe relief. The pictures help with understanding the text, but they dont provide any deeper thoughts or meanings. Sometimes, the illustrations need the text because the illustrations dont provide enough information. For instance in one of the pages, Fred and Lucy are seen standing and McDuff can also be seen waiting outside the house, but the reader doesnt know what Fred or Lucy are thinking because the reader cant see their faces.
