At a literary faire in San Francisco, Elaine Elinson read an excerpt that described how a San Franciscan Rosa Parks beat the segregation that characterized the early 1900s transportation system. Because of it, I bought the book.Things I liked: I really enjoy how this book takes the reader through the civil rights battles that defined and continue to affect the state of California. Each chapter covers a certain topic, like race, gender, sexuality, free speech. And each chapter is filled with biographical and historical vignettes of the people and causes who have brought the state to where we currently stand. As a native Californian, I also loved reading about people whose names Im familiar with and how they influenced the state. I also really loved how the book shows that there are many civil liberties we take for granted today or how the same arguments that maintain oppression are used over and over again. (Example: The reasons that ladies cant vote in the early 1900s are some of the same reasons people use against same-sex marriage today. Ridiculous!)Things that I wish could be better: This book is packed with information. PACKED. And as such, its hard to remember facts or digest large chunks of the book in one sitting. For example, here are some things I can remember: Early Californians really didnt like the Chinese and were really mean to them. Also, we had a bilingual constitution in the beginning. See what I mean? Its all rather vague in my head. This is another reason why Ive been reading this for a year.However, those facts aside, I highly recommend this book for Californians and persons interested in history, politics and government for they are fascinating topics.
