This book is a part of the Jefferson Market Library reference collection, and seems to be, as far as I can tell, the definitive book about the Womens Detention Center which used to overshadow the beautiful former Jefferson Market Courthouse. In what was supposed to be a revolution in progressive prisons and rehabilitation, the detention center referred to casually as the House of D ended up as *the* example of the horrendous conditions of Americas prisons—and this example was right in the heart of the West Village. The art deco behemoth was demolished in 1973 and replaced by a garden, and the JM Library with its gorgeous tower again holds the focal point for 10th street and 7th avenue.Harris describes not only the disgusting conditions and abysmal failures of the prison, but goes into the lives of the inmates themselves. Harris is very fair in her treatment of the detainees and the justice system of which they are caught up in. Yet, as the facts avail themselves, the prison and the system holds more responsibility towards providing for a righteous society, and instead only serves to house and abuse criminals. And they could be nothing other than criminals, for according to the system, thats what marks them as a resident of the H of D. Once a baddy, always a baddy.Harris focus on the lives of prostitutes, or shitkickers and addicts is gritty, but not romantically so—its just depressing. The reader is given an idea of how difficult it is to beat the odds when your mother was an addict and your father was never home. Of particular note was her look into the Green family, a family of sharecroppers who like so many other Southerners moved to New York and other Northern cities to escape discrimination. To the popular imagination, Harlem was a city of Black people, for Black people. In reality, it was the result of a similar type of hatred found in the South—all the Blacks in the city forced to live in a single ghettoized area where gross poverty begat soul crushing blight. Harris interview with the Green family demonstrated the futility of passing on poisons through the generations, and how desperation, hatred, and anger become more and more grotesque with the coming generations.In short, these are the inmates of the H of D—those with nowhere else to go, nothing else to do. On her featured chapter of Molly Mcguire, an Irishwoman whod been in the Center countless times and received no education whatsoever, so expands upon the degeneracy of her and others like her on the Bowery—those who can be nothing but alcoholics because they are on the Bowery, and are on the Bowery because they are nothing but alcoholics.Anyway, this was a very well done expose. It was of particular interest to me, actually, as I am working on an art piece about Old Jeff and the House of D to show at Jefferson Market Library. It was quite a ride.
