My rating for this book kept swaying between 3 and 4 stars, but Im settling on 3. Its very nice, but the pacing and other things just threw me off throughout. There are some great ideas in this book. The main alien race are four-eyed, six-limbed talking horses; theres a good time paradox, good dialogue, lots of time travel and engaging twists. The characters actually get to do things that have impact, whether its killing or being killed or simply talking their way out of a very difficult situation, and thats always very satisfying. Sam, particularly, stands out in all the ways her character was meant to: as an inexperienced teenaged social rights activist who just wants to save the planet. Jo Grant and John Benton also make an appearance, although neither gets to do much. Jo shines a bit at the end, and her character development is interesting, but we never get to see just how she got to this emotional phase in her life - all we know is that its twenty years after she married Cliff, and things just didnt work out somehow. Its all sort of vaguely hinted at and then never mentioned again. The imagery in the novel is well-written, but there were a lot of unnecessary bits. Most of the truly alien machines and artifacts are just magic and never explained. The TARDIS might as well have been a wishing lamp. The Doctor is thoroughly tortured, as is getting to be a habit for Eight - but it doesnt incapacitate him in any way, so the impact is lost. Sam gets her tit grabbed by a caveman in what I consider a front-runner for the hotly contested most arbitrarily uncomfortable scene in Doctor Who title. And so on. Overall, a nice entry in the series, and worth reading if you like Doctor Who. But most themes in the novel have been explored in other stories, in ways I personally found more satisfying.
