I have a stack of old missionary biographies to get through. I was picking them up and reading a few pages then discarding most of them. I began to do the same for this one but a few hours later was still reading and ended up finishing it! The readers note states that this is fiction but all of the stories are true!? I think the author means that he is aware of the stories having taken place but that he has added some creative detail in places. It actually works really well. The first section of the book detail an encounter between a man and a woman from different tribes. The woman is about to be bitten by a snake, the man seeks to intervene. This sets off a catalogue of events involving tribal warfare and customs that have to be observed. The second part of the story begins by the introduction of a medical missionary working in the same area of Africa. We learn some details of his African co-workers--how they came to faith. The two stories then overlap when the missionary becomes involved in helping the man from the first story.The third part of the book focuses on the missionary doctor at home in the States on furlough and agonising over the decision about returning to Africa due to falling in love with a girl who doesnt believe she is called to mission.....The creative detail in the first part of this book reminded me of Peace Child and other books by Don Richardson. The second part was more of a traditional missionary biography but I liked the way the author focused on the testimonies of his co-workers. The third part was an unexpected diversion and a very real issue that many missionaries will face. It was relayed in an honest manner and the outcome was by no means predictable.There was something special about this book. I sensed the passion of the author for his work and the people, his understanding of the cultural dilemmas that arose and his efforts to deal with them in a way that the natives could accept and his humanity through his personal struggles. I highly recommend this book if you can get hold of it. There is no bad language or sexual content (there are a few kissing scenes.) There is some graphic violence due to the natives behaviour and customs. There are also some graphic medical procedures.
