A useful book. Mr. Doyles expertise in historical corsetry and its construction is excellent. The patterns given are general, but the author gives detailed instructions on how to customize them. They cover the sixteenth through twentieth centuries, illustrated in black-and-white with original artworks and photographs and photos of actual old corsets, corsetmaking accessories, patent diagrams, advertisements, and modern people measuring and constructing corsets. There are some of Doyles own drawings as well, but I fear they are not as helpful as the original source material. His charted patterns are quite useful, but when he tries to draw his own version of historical figures strange distortions creep in. As well, the book could have used a good copy edit. There are sentence fragments, extraneous commas, and the odd typo.With this book the intermediate sewer has a good head start on making her own historically accurate corsets.***As a side note, the cover photograph of a girl in a corset before a three-way mirror has been heavily retouched, probably about when it was taken (around 1902, by my guess). You can really see it in the girls face, which looks more like a Victorian painting than the realistic views of the back of her head, but probably looked more natural to Victorian eyes. Her corset has also been repainted, especially around the waist, to make it look smaller. You can see signs of this if you compare the reflected ruffles on the right figures underbust, which stick out but are missing on the front figure, who has had an artificial black background painted smoothly over her right side. Her left side has been painted with a shadow to match the contour of her right side, but it is also false. Her reflected legs have been completely painted over. It looks like she was actually -- even laced in -- several inches larger in diameter, which would still have been very small.
