The setting could be described as post-post-apocalyptic: nuclear war is 500 years past ,and recovered technological knowledge has allowed the construction of a coastal city that might as well be New York; it even has a depressed, immigrant-populated area suspiciously named Devils Pot. But, possibly due to its isolation, social organization hasnt matched pace, and aristocracy still rules the city. The resultant juggling of fantasy and sf motifs is odd, but I can buy it. But while the big picture is reasonably compelling, the sketchy details (this is before Dune made sf writers get off their duffs and REALLY worldbuild) give things a sort of Buck Rogers cheesiness. The way the city of Telphar is often described from a distance as jutting into the air reminds me of the Emerald City.Delany here also tries to write in a much more serious and affecting way. It never ever works. When he wants to get his hands dirty with imagery, emotion, and poetry, the results are ineffective, distracting, irritating, lumpy in a John Gardnerish sort of way. And were not talking just once in a while; particularly in the final volume of the trilogy, its just page after page of the stuff. An exception: the best-written part of the book is probably the subplot regarding the war in the second volume. But what the conflict amounts to, and that the characters are shocked by the revelation that should have been apparent to them from the outset, makes it clear that Delany would rather make a point than make sense. From then on it becomes an interminable bore, nonsense piled on nonsense. I can handle when science fiction has crappy science in it, but no reader of any kind of fiction should put up with crappy logic or crappy philosophy.I admire Delany because, more than any fiction writer I can name, hes always clearly writing at the very limit of his ability and understanding, about people at the limits of their abilities and understanding. But here he ascribes profundity to that which is merely clever, and writes as though he has full command of skills that, early in his career, arent so much developing as just not yet extant. He always aims for mind-blowing, but this time can only manage headache-inducing.
