This new book about identical twins Ling and Ting is a companion to 2010’s Geisel Award winning Ling and Ting Not Exactly the Same. The first book saw the girls having haircuts, cooking dumplings, and practicing with chopsticks, but this second one focuses on all the usual activities associated with having a birthday. On their shared birthday, Ling and Ting open presents, buy gifts for one another, bake cakes, make wishes, and read a story about a set of twins similar to themselves who have a much less exciting birthday. Each short chapter is a story unto itself, but also contributes to the larger whole.While the first book focuses very obviously on the similarities and differences between identical twins, this one’s central message is a bit more subtle. It took me a couple of chapters before I realized the main theme is really sharing. The girls share the shoes they are given for their birthday, each taking one from each pair. Each girl buys a gift for her sister that she wishes she could have for herself, hoping that her sister will share it with her. In the final chapter, when they read a story about twins named Ming and Sing who do not share, the girls are disappointed in their fictional counterparts, and they are grateful to be the kind of twins who do share everything. It’s not easy to make a concept like sharing into something kids are eager to read about, but this book does a nice job of delivering the message without preaching or even necessarily trying to teach kids how to share. Ling and Ting model good sharing in a way that makes the reader want to be like them.Compared with the first book, the language in this one isn’t quite as natural. I was almost constantly aware of the fact that the writing is simplified for beginning readers and that the story is told with a controlled vocabulary. The first book reads aloud very nicely, whereas the language in this second one is more stilted and does not flow as easily. I’m not sure it would work as well on class visits or in story time as the first book. I do, however, like the way the overall story is broken down into six short chapters, each of which relates one specific part of the girls’ day. By dividing the book this way, the author provides the new reader with the chance to absorb and reflect on what she has read before moving on to the next segment of the story. I also enjoyed the fact that the last chapter tells a story similar to what has just happened to Ling and Ting, but with significant changes. Readers will be able to practice recalling what they have read as they compare Ling and Ting’s birthday to that of the fictitious twins, Ming and Sing.The illustrations of Ling and Ting celebrating their birthday are perfectly suited to the overall tone of the story. The characters’ faces, clothes, and body language accurately reflect the early elementary audience who will read their story, and their expressions provide important clues for figuring out how the girls feel at different moments. My favorite picture is on page 34, when the twins slyly eye the gifts they have just given one another, each obviously wishing she could have her twin’s present instead. This one image tells the reader everything he needs to know about how the text is to be interpreted, and it also provides a little Easter egg for Ling and Ting fans, because the book Ling has bought for Ting bears the exact same cover as Ling and Ting Not Exactly the Same.The short chapters, universally appealing subject matter, and familiar settings make Ling and Ting Share a Birthday a great choice for beginning readers, whether they have been introduced to the original story or not. Parents might also like it as a read-aloud about sharing for preschoolers, or as the inspiration for a Ling and Ting themed birthday party. In fact, Grace Lin’s website provides a kit for just such an event, which I think would also make a fun library program.
